After the officers handcuffed Gant and placed him in their squad car, they went on to search his vehicle, finding a handgun and a plastic bag of cocaine.

Gant was arrested 12 feet from his car, and was handcuffed and secured in the back of the police car. This gave him or chance to destroy evidence or grab the weapon. Gant was also arrested for a suspended license with gives no evidence or reasonable cause for the Police Officer to search his car. The 4th amendment  allows a person who is being arrested close enough to the car to grab or destroy evidence or weapon inside the care.
