I would conclude that 2000-2007 was an era of lesser government intervention, stagnant wages, and rising college and housing costs resulting in greater economic inequality. The decade before was one of prosperity while the years after experienced a recession caused by a lassiez-faire approach.

This song shows the economic struggles of immigrants coming to America. During the 1920's, there was hatred and fear of immigrants due to Red Scare. This caused acts to form like the Emergency Quota Act of 1921 and the Immigration Act of 1924. Not only was it hard for immigrants to gain opportunity, but farmers also delt with a large recession early on in the decade, and struggled to keep their businesses running.

The song "Death to my Hometown" by Bruce Springsteen describes my decade as it accuses the American government of not preventing the 2008 recession which greatly harmed the working class. He explains that while "no bombs fell from the sky" it "destroyed our families" by removing societal opportunity. Springsteen points the blame towards corporations and rich Americans who did not intervene, "whose crimes have gone unpunished" and "walk the streets as free men."

After learning about the economic conditions in the 20th Century, I think that the many technological advances have really shaped America today. With Steve Jobs' invention of Apple and the discovery of the internet, there is a clear shift in the economy during this time. The 20th Century brought less government involvement, but more economic growth which is still prevalent in modern day. Without the many inventions during this decade, our identity as a country would be so different than it is today, as we rely on this advanced technology for many forms of communication and work.

A healthy economy consists of a government that's not too heavily involved, but also not completely absent. The citizens have the rights to own private businesses and buy from whoever they want, but it is also regulated enough that there is not corruption. An example of an unhealthy economy is the economy during the Great Depression, as the employment rates were extremely low and the gross domestic product was extremely low. A healthy government needs enough supplies to meet the demand, as well as enough people to gain profit and work to improve the economy.

The workforce needs to be motivated and self-driven, and the consumers need to be willing to buy from not just the biggest companies, but also the smaller and newer businesses. The government's priority needs to be the well-being of the citizens, and they need to remain cautious of the pendulum and the momentum that is still existent from past actions.

There would be part of a decade where the government wasn't involved and the country was modernizing and experiencing an economic boom, but also was filled with corruption. At this point the government would get involved, this caused the economy to not do as well with more guidelines. The last phase is then when the government steps back again and the whole thing repeats. During the 20th century the economy had points in time where it was absolutely thriving, and points in time where is was at its worst

World War II had just ended and the economy was booming. Home ownership rates rose, over half of families owned cars, televisions, and washing machines, jobs were better, and industries were producing mass amounts of product. Americans controlled almost 40% of the world's wealth, and the majority of people could afford a middle class life. In Bruce Springsteen's song he talks about the "better days," which describe the optimism of this time and the fact that the war had just ended. He sings about a "life of leisure," which many people fulfilled. Overall, this song is very positive and cheerful which very accurately describes 1950-1965.

The economy had also begun to suffer int he early 2000s as the government had little regulation in the markets. This caused the housing of prices to increase: leaving many people without homes. Since household income had not increased along with he housing price, it became very difficult for American families to stay afloat. The economic conditions of America did not seem too good, as during this time there were many wars and terrorist attacks that would effect the economy(9/11:closing the market). All of this would come to its absolute worst when there was the Great Recession of 2008. However I realized in the later 2000s the increase in technology impacted the economy. Many daily things could not be achieved without technology: teaching(smart board), zoom, etc. An in crease in technology helped the economy as there was more products and jobs being built.

Although he government often uses intervention as a form of safeguarding Americans and the economy, it often negatively effects the economy, as it leads to less innovation and higher consumer prices. However, when the government doesn't get involved it can have an equally taxing effect: inflation and a decrease in GDP.

The economy constantly changes, and will continue to based on external factors of that specific decade. For the 1920's, there was a recession early on because of the previous conditions of the market during World War I, resulting in much government involvement. However, through the 1960's and 70's there was a lack of government involvement in taxes in energy causing inflation. This comparison illuminates the wide range of economic conditions through the 20th century.

This was mainly caused due to the rapidly changing levels of government involvement. The government was too slow to act in times of economic conflicts, such as low growth in GDP and high inflation rates. As a result, the amount of intervention or lack therof does more harm than good and supresses an already recovering economy. One example of this is in the 90's and eary 2000's, where a thriving economy is laid back just to face a resession and large rates of unemployment.

Other recessions and periods of difficulty, whether economic (eg: housing crisis, stagflation) or not (eg: wars, 911), similarly resulted in lasting change. Change was the result of turmoil, so though there was hardship, it allowed the economy to experience net growth through the century.

The government impacts the health of its economy a lot, though not instantly. As seen with the transition from Carter to Reagan, a good president is critical to mitigate damage from crises. However, in that same instance, it can be seen that the government's policies take time to help. Reagan's entrance to office did not instantaneously solve the stagflation from the 70s, nor could any other president change the economy so quickly.

Throughout the whole century the pendulum was in constant swing, with each decade causing more problems that required adjustments for the next. The 20s prospered on a free market with little government support as the economy boomed following WWI, however, this lack of regulation would cause trouble for the 30s, as business's took advantage of workers, unemployment rose, and the the market crashed. It required extremely heavy government intervention to help the people back on their feet, and once unemployment was down and the production and jobs were on the rise from a war time economy in the 40s, the government was able to back off. These 3 decades are perfect examples for the economic conditions of the 20th century. The government allows the economy and GDP to grow from the free market, but then eventually they must step in to stop exploitation, rising unemployment rates and more. Upon that being fixed they can step back. This same pattern continues itself across the 20th century.

A healthy economy shouldn't remain stagnant, but swing back and forth between government involvement and a free market. There almost needs to be an anticipation, something we dont see in the American economy. In the US economy, the pendulum swings back and forth with a delay. The recession occurs, unemployment rates increase, and then the government gets involved, only after the Great Depression sets in, or only after the bubble burst. A healthy economy would allow that open laissez faire style to take shape and grow the GDP and production, but then notice when a bubble is growing and when a recession is occurring and realize that workers are dealing with poor conditions, and then try to fix the problem then, before it gets out of control.

A healthy economy shouldn't only just include strong production and modernization, but also social services, housing, working conditions. When that pendulum is swinging, when that outside interference causes the pendulum to swing, its moving it over to an action from the government, whether that be to back up or take action. And you need both of those actions in a healthy economy. You need the corporations and the production and deals between nations, but you also need a minimum wage and regulation of housing interest rates and things to protect the people to. There need to be those regulations put in place to prevent the economy of America from turning into an economy at the expense of the American people

Government Involvement has one of if not the largest impacts on the health of the economy. The government is, or is supposed to be, the voice of the people, and their representation in the economy. The government is that response to the workers having unfair conditions, or housing rates increasing. The government is the only thing that has the power to stop the corporations and protect the people, so it has a huge impact on the economies health, as it's involvement is crucial to representing the peoples needs. That being said, we saw how multiple times in the 20th century, the economy began to grow stagnant under heavy government regulation, which in response, the government backed off and returned to a laissez faire approach. Therefore, the governments involvement, or lack there of in some cases, is crucial to maintaining the health of the economy and of the people.

And then at the end we wanted to show some tie in to government involvement, regulation, and the FDR administration putting laws into place to help the people get back on their feet.
"Parched crops dying 'neath a dead sun
We've been praying but no good comes
The dog's howling, home's stripped bare
We've been worried but now we're scared"
From the first verse the tone is already set as a dark wasteland, farmland, where people work but they dont see any prosperity from their work, because the crops are parched under the dead son. The people are out of jobs, in poor conditions, they're worried and home is stripped bare.
"Rainmaker, a little faith for hire
Rainmaker, the house is on fire
Rainmaker, take everything you have
Sometimes folks need to believe in something so bad, so bad, so bad
They'll hire a rainmaker"
The people here put their faith in the rainmaker, the person who will make the crops grow again. This for us was a stand in for the government. The pendulum must swing, as the people need help, so the government must become involved and put out the house on fire.

The driving factor of the inconstant economic conditions of the 20th century are mostly due to the governments short term involvements when needed. There were multiple times when the government became heavily involved, one example of this was during the great depression. The great depression was a time of great economic despair where many people lost jobs, houses, and money. The government became heavily involved by creating many work related regulations along with many new laws regarding money. On the flipside of things, the government was also not involved at times. An example of this was during the early 2000's when the government put a hand off approach on the economy to help it evolve.

A healthy economy can be so easy to break because even if the government becomes too involved, it can cause a shift in power leading to a shift in the economy. An example of this is when unemployment rates increase, the government steps in to help the problem and once its fixed they go back to a hands off approach.

It is notable that when there is too much, or too little, government involvement, the economy fails to remain stable. Therefore resulting in decreased employment rates and GDP, and increased inflation, which were very much evident during the Great Depression (1930s). However, a healthy economy. not only needs a balanced economy but also steady GDP, low inflation, and well distributed job opportunities. If the government is way too involved they will start producing only what they want and there will be un unpleasent shift for the people. If something bad happens to the economy and the people than it is the governments obligation to step in and fix this, but if they are too passive it will only continue to decline. There needs to be a healthy distribution of power.

There are several necessary factors that contribute to the creation of a healthy economy. For a country's economy to be healthy, employment rates and prices need to be stable and there needs to be evident improvement within businesses and corporations. For instance, there needs to be profitable businesses, that also open up job opportunities. Also, these businesses need to be adapting to societal changes.

An economy's health can be greatly impacted by government involvement. Too much involvement, and too little involvement by the government can cause serious damage to the economy's health. When a government becomes too involved in the economy, productivity decreases within businesses and corporations as a result of citizens feeling trapped and limited to what they can act upon. However, when there is too little government involvement, the distribution of wealth becomes very evident as the wealth gap increases due to the exploitation of resources. Too little involvement also results in the government having to step in to fix the terrible situation the economy is in. So, in relation to the idea of a pendulum, too little and too much government involvement results in drastic and never ending swinging back and forth by the bob of the pendulum.

We believe that Bruce Springsteen's "Leah" best represented the eagerness of those in the 1990s to achieve the success and stability they had been longing for. This idea is displayed well in the final verse of the song (shown below).

"I got something in my heart I been waiting to give
I got a life I wanna start, one I been waiting to live
No more waiting, tonight I feel the light, I say the prayer
I open the door, I climb the stairs"

This song tells the story of Vietnam War veterans returning home to a bleak version of America, and thus took place in the time period we covered (1965-1979). The lyrics often refer to one of the main characters not realizing how dire his situation is (mistaking quicksand for mere mud), paralleling the false sense of security and prosperity initially following the war. The song also references the economic situation at the time, stating that there is "nothin' left/ But some blood where the body fell/ That is, nothin' left that you could sell" and mentioning how there was no oil to be found, only blood, a metaphor in line with the energy shortages in the later 1960s and 1970s. Throughout the entire song, Springsteen speaks of a flood, similar to the imagery in the political cartoon we viewed that used a flood to represent inflation.

Out of Work, a song written by Bruce Springsteen, relates to the 1980s as it can be connected to the most important part of the economy during the time, the Reagan Recession. During his time Reagan cut taces and imposed budget cuts hoping to raise the GDP, but it came with side affect of unemployment rates spiking. In Out of Work, the lyrics are all about how this person is "out of work" and they "need a job" in "these tough times". They also call on "Mr. President" to take action even though they recognize that the President has got his plans.

The level of Government involvement in the economy can either greatly help it or hurt it. For example, during times of war, government involvement in the economy is necessary in order to keep the country running and to prepare it for war. Without any government involvement, monopolies arise, and workers are exploited. This is very unhealthy for the economy and is why there should be some government involvement in the economy to regulate it.

The government is able to fix the economy in times of crisis by getting more involved, but too heavy involvement or being fairly involved for a long time can lead to more problems.
