Vorrei imparare a trasmettere serenità e fiducia.

Alicia in the video it confirmed my idea, namely that diversity is a treasure. In fact, even if each of us is unique, we all need the same "attention", is about learning is about social relations. Just in the school you must instill the culture of diversity, because it is small it is more easily prepared acceptance of others, even in the most egocentric stages of growth. In the human being has an innate need to be with others and schools should educate students to develop appropriate social behaviors. None of the pupils can be neglected his educational needs and the school must customize the learning path according to those needs. This has a positive effect in the students and motivates them to collaborate and learn. Today, with the Internet and the multiplicity of tools available online and offline, everything becomes easier.

IOANNA, GREECE Hi everyone! I am Ioanna and I am from Greece. I have been a Head Teacher since 2007 in 21st Primary School of Athens “Lela Karagianni”. The school is located in one of the most depressed areas of the city centre where the great majority of the residents are economical immigrants and refugees. In our school there are 218 students aged 6-12 years old coming from 22 countries.Since the late 90s and until recently the majority of our students come from families migrant workers mainly from Albania and the former Eastern bloc countries. The last two years because of the crisis in the "Greater Middle East" countries, the demography of our students has changed. Out of the 218 students 115 are children-second generation immigrants (55 from Albania, 20 from Romania 8 out of Africa and the rest from various countries of the former Eastern bloc) and 28 newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers (Syria, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh). Our school’s initiative in educational programmes which promote intercultural education and contribute to the peaceful cohabitation within a multicultural social environment, are not enough to encounter the challenges created by the increased incoming of the newly arrived migrants who don’t speak the Greek language. Most of our classes are similar with Martina’ class from Parma, Italy. I am very glad for thisOur blog http://blogs.sch.gr/21dimath/Our website http://21dimath.weebly.com/

Malmö City from Sweden, there I work, has some schools only with students with a foreign background there the integration process is quite slow because the teachers face many challenges. In the same class can be students from Serbia, Somalia and Afghanistan, for example, which do not share the same traditions, values and ideas so these students can start to fight very easy. Therefore, I think that what Alicia said is totally right. Our students have to learn to live with each other, to acknowledge and respect that are different cultures and religions in this already diverse world.

I'm very eager to learn from teacher colleagues in other countries what the practice is like in other countries, because I know there are countries with a lot more immigrants than Finland. I think it's very important to teach intercultural competence and respect for other cultures and values in school. For many children the school is the only place they can learn skills like that.

Sometimes I find it so difficult to be in the same room with my beloved ones! You can guess the reasons. I think we all feel the same way from time to time. I try everyday to overcome the small obstacles like lack of understanding, misunderstandings, negative feelings and so on with a lot of patience and personal development through reading, asking for help and advice by the experts. This is the way I feel about cultural diversity. A small step everyday towards accepting differences, breaking stereotypes, being more resilient to all the "stormy" weather coming toward us. Acceptance and understanding are inevitable for survival!

Last year, asylum seekers came to our community and some of the children attended the school. That was a new situation for all of us, and we soon realized that we need information and guidance not only in cultural issues, but also in educational aspects. This course is one way to learn about these things.
The world is changing; it is easy to get close to others all around the world - both in person and virtual. Therefore, it is extremely important to learn about other cultures. It is important to know about the differences, but in my opinion, it is even more important to know about the similarities. That way we can avoid predjudice and racism.

Very often, when talking to people outside school either in a face to face interaction or on a social network, I get the idea that they really don't have a clue of what real life is. They use "you" (or, worse "they" utterances...), generalizing judgements based on assumption created by the Media. In a classroom, pupils have an unique possibility to come to terms to a completely different point of view... I often tell my students about the man who was speaking with another - SouthAmerican one - without getting the point of the conversation. The misunderstanding was all about points of view: while for one the past was behind the back, for the other was in front because, to be honest, the only things that you know, because you can see them, are the things that you have already experienced... The misterious, scary, unknown ones, are the future, which you can't see yet (and no human being has eyes on his back... No matter what's his country...). Or what the Incas thought of the Conquistadores who destroyed life just for money, whereas them killed men as their most important and sacred things to offer to Gods... Apart from the point that, in the classroom, every single pupil is different, and we should value every difference as a resource (even though, honestly, it's sometimes very hard and not always rewarding...) I think the hypothetical regular Italian pupil has an opportunity to learn unvaluable skills to spend in the global market (and life) of the foreseeable future in an early stage of the life, when it's easier, being the brain more flexible. I hope that being open-minded won't become a vantage robots can have over humans... We, as teachers, are supposed to find ways to improve these cooperative skills, possibly in an engaging context, so that they won't be wasted. I for one often think that I'm not capable of facing this challenge and I'll be crushed by the overload of responsabilities, getting heavier every day but, if there is a method to succeed, I guess is the one chosen by this course: to exchange ideas with colleagues that, not differently from our students, all have different resources and experiences to share.

In the last five or six years our students ave been mostly migrants coming from many different Countries: Egypt, Morocco, Senegal, Somalia, Ivory Coast, Mali, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Albania, Dominican Republic, Venezuela and many others. Everyday we cope with diversity in general and, in my opinion, students needs to be guided in their way to becoming part of the human society as individuals, but at the same time as individuals taking part in groups. Society is made up by diversity. Sometimes, especially in lower secondary school, students aren’t able to catch spontaneously the richness hidden in cultural diversity. I would have real competences in dealing with cultural diversity, especially when I have many different cultures in the same class.

I agree with Alicia, Erika and Tomislav ‘s opinion. I strongly believe in sharing as a synonymous of mutual respect. School must be an harbinger of society and must be a place, THE PLACE, where everybody can be himself and increase his self-esteem. Psychologic studies show that humans find, know, explore and valorize themself only between the relationship with their “caregiver”, peer and the enviroment too. Only between social life, women and men can discover who they are. Everybody is unique, even twins are unique too. Our culture, our background is what differentiates us. Each of us is the result of our family story and our citizen story. But if someone watches and compares the histories of peoples discovers that they are very similar. So, actually, what differentiates us is what joint us. School must teach its. Dialogue and cooperation are the most important instruments that can realize it. Through the use of thecnologies too, physical and ideological distances will reduced.

Rosaria Filippo - Italy- Diversity is part of man's nature.Demonstrate that diversity is a source of wealth is not easy. The difficulties encountered require to put in place strategies and differentiated solutions to resolve. The school must promote the development of the potential of each one starting from the characteristics, needs, the needs and requirements of each individual as well as organize targeted and differentiated.Family, school and territory must work together ... but most of the time is just utopia. As a teacher I feel the inadequacy of the tools available to me compared to the ambitious objectives set out by current standards. I feel left alone to face the problems, no signs, no special training and no support of routes and appropriate teaching materials. For my part there is a great willingness and openness to foreign students but encounter many difficulties in the daily management of the work in the classroom and with family relationships.Very often foreign children studying in Italy tend to hide the suffering and difficulties related to the fact of having to disguise to be similar to others. They will in fact frequently asked to adapt quickly and find their own place within the rules and daily routines.I feel helpless in front of this. As a special education teacher I warn my failure. Interact with curricular colleagues often hard already when I rise in defense of the student with disabilities that I follow .. let alone a student of class which, according to them, would not have direct responsibility. This is my favorite book ... the one with which I started talking to my kids for diversity: "Elmer: different and equal." Elmer is an elephant, a fantastic character who realizes he's the only multi-color in a world of gray elephants.Every child is "rich", the bearer of potential, originality, history and memory, is active child, builder of its own relationships and knowledge, needs a path that meets the needs of the children themselves. (National Guidelines 2004)To grow you need to meet someone else; someone to deal with, someone who will listen and listen, able to be at the same time limit and resource thus stimulating a serious dialogue, respectful, constructive. The relational dimension is so fundamental.

Ever since I was introduced to the concept of intercultural (communicative) competence this topic fascinated me. I think the ability to adapt to new situations and to interact with others is an essential skill that is not just restricted to the classroom but also to our lives. Sharing opinions with other people as well as getting to know new facets of the world surrounding is very interesting. Therefore, I'm looking forward to acquiring new skills/picking on other brains when it comes to finding orientation in my ever-changing classroom. In the long run, we can't deny that our world will become more complex and diverse (which I think to be a good thing), yet I don't want to waste the opportunity to learn from others and professionalise my teaching with regard to interculturality/diversity.

The reality may be difficult but it is also rich in beauty and variety and at school teachers experience the beauty of this varity discovering its most exciting and surprising aspects. Cultural differences are an important opportunity for the moral and cultural growth of any society and therefore must be valued.
Giuliana ItalyLearning about cultural diversity and building bridges between cultures allow our pupils to become open-minded, responsible and global cizitens. As teachers, we have to contribute as much as possible to both sharing and reflecting on our and other cultures in our classrooms. The multicultural society we live in definetely requires us to be intercultural competents. As a result, taking this course may help me to get and improve my tools so as to acquire the best intercultural competence.

Vani (Fot. Vas.), Athens, Greece. At schools, every child and adult is different. This is also the case when all are from the same country. So cultural diversity, in a wider sense, applies to all contexts; where it can be understood to denote the diversity of each individual's personality. When we start talking and working on cultural diversity with our learners, we can help them become more tolerant to each other and to human beings outside the school context. This can lead to collaboration, effective learning, progress, democracy, and peace.

I strongly believe in the importance of cultural diversity in schools, mainly for two reasons.
First, as human beings we are obviously connected one to another; learning how to deal with diversity and appreciate the treasure this brings to us it's necessary if we want to grow as empathic, responsible and sociable human beings.
On the other hand, Europe is facing a very challenging era: thousands of people from different countries are coming to our continent looking for a better future, better opportunities, peace and respect. Learning how to welcome them, how to share our values and learn theirs, learning how to co-exist in peace and harmony is a duty we cannot further ignore.
For generations, my country was a land of "emigration": Italians left Italy and went abroad to escape famine, illness and war. Now Italy has become a land of "immigration": people from Asia, Africa and South America are escaping the same problems we had in the past and are coming to Italy seeking for a better future. I have the impression we are not ready, we are not trained enough to guarantee these people and ourselves a serene co-existence. But we have to learn. It's a responsibility we cannot deny. And I believe education is always the most powerful weapon against prejudice, ignorance and discrimination.

It is important to learn about cultural diversity in our classrooms because that is something we see around us everyday. We have to live with it and our students too, we can be enriched from it, but only if we learn how to use the right "keys" to interpret it.

I think it is very important to learno about cultural diversity in the school, because students must develop an intercultural competence in order to be able to live in a multicultural society. Teacher must help students to understand that cultural diversity doesn't mean better or worse culture. They must understand that each person is different from another and it's important to accept diversity and to see it as enrichment. For this reason it's important the comparison with other cultures, also to define the own cultural identity.

Furthermore, schools are becoming more diverse and flexible as a way to cope with the situation. Therefore, the Greek schools need well educated teachers in the aspect of cultural diversity and competence, teachers who are great supporters of an nonracial and undiscriminating educational system in which each student will get the education that is needed for him based on his cultural backround (personalised teaching). Through this course I hope I will be more educated and aware in order to create an intercultural class in the future and involve all the students inside regardless their origin, their religion and their language.

Thanks for watching <3

Roberta, Italy In Italy, during the last years, there are migratory flow from Africa and in my classrooms I have foreign students who don’t speak Italian with a lot of problems, this situation encourage me to take the course hoping to develop and adapt some ideas to my daily challenges. In this contest I believe it is basilar to learn about cultural diversity and have intercultural competence. At the beginning of the school year, in September, I ask to my foreign students (sometimes using drawings) to illustrate their experience and the reason of their migration and I also ask to speak about their city, their family; normally students are very interested to know about other culture, other language, other dishes etc. and make questions. This type of dialogue create empathy, respect and understanding for other cultures creating collaboration.

So the presence of different cultures in school represents a growth opportunity for both students and all teachers.

The school can promote the development of the potential of each. To achieve this objective, teachers have to understand the characteristics, the needs and the

requirements of each individual so they can implement different educational strategies.

The school must teach children and young people to respect others without preconceived notions, stereotypes and prejudices.

I put a lot of effort in promoting intercultural encounters and dialogue in every training I organise because my direct experience of an integrating migrant in Italy taught me that school is the most important place to shape the attitude of both young migrants and locals towards coexistence of differing cultures in a same social context. In fact, through the pupils, you have an influence not only on the pupils themselves, but on their families, on their peer groups, in their migrant and religious communities, and ultimately on the way they will shape the society.
