Digital portfolios, are a powerful tool in creating a learner centered classroom in the way that is provides a VOICE to all students. A digital portfolio can represent more than any GPA or academic grade, but rather provide a space where students can showcases their growth. Whether at the elementary level or college level before heading out on the job hunt, a digital portfolio gives students the opportunity to reflect on projects, goals and track growth over time. It can be something to celebrate and showcase the whole child, in ways that other assessments and platforms cannot.

Digital portfolios are a great way to capture students learning. Not only do they provide voice to students, but they offer choice. Teachers can provide choice in many different ways--what platform they use for their portfolio, what products to include, what reflection questions to answer, etc. Choice is so important in digital portfolios because students have control over what they share and can focus on their strengths and successes. However, I think the most important thing to highlight is the ability to showcase growth and reflection through a digital portfolio. I think back to using Seesaw with my fifth graders and the growth we'd see in their writing posts over the course of the year! Not only is studying that growth important, but reflecting on how they've grown over time can be incredibly impactful moving forward. Digital portfolios, when made a part of the classroom, can be a wonderful way to focus on student growth, rather than grades.

I think a Genius Hour project would make for a great portfolio topic. A digital portfolio would allow for the display of all three areas: growth, showcase, and evaluation in the application of the design process.

This past year I created an Instagram account for our department to help boost interest in some of our courses. I use the webservice linktree to embed more content through a link in the bio. I’ve started to weigh publishing into the project score during the second half of the year. The value is adjusted each time to make the difference between an A and a B+ on the rubric.

I think one way that I would like to structure a new portfolio assignment would be more long-range for the students. The idea would be to have students in my level one design course create an Instagram account as part of the course requirement. They would post things that they create as a way of submitting their work. Currently, I have students tag our account in the post, but it would be more sharing a link for smaller assignments. A Linktree link could be used to provide access to their portfolio/website.

This would allow students to be more reflective and concise in their work before making it publiuc. It would also allow them to easily share their work when asking for letters of recommendation.

I also think another area of use of digital portfolios could be for some of the new student requirements we have for the PA College and Career Standards. Students need 8 pieces of evidence and this would be a great way for students to structure and collect those artifacts over time. This is something new for our district but here is an example from another school.

After looking at the graphic from George Couros, many of his look-fors can be supported by digital portfolios. Giving students choice on what they put in the portfolio, how it's organized as well as the platform it's presented in and shared is huge for student engagement and voice! One area I lack in is making time for student reflection. Digital portfolios allow for students to take the time to reflect on their work and realize how much they have grown over the course of the school year. I love the idea of using digital portfolios as an assessment. In my experience, traditional tests don't always accurately reflect student growth and can cause some students unnecessary frustration. Digital portfolios are naturally differentiated for all learners so that they can feel successful!

The first two things that stood out to me from George Couros graphic is providing students with choice and valuing their voice. Digital portfolios provides great opportunities to do both of those things. It provides a creative way for students to have choice in how they want to showcase their learning and growth while at the same time allowing their own voice and perspective to come through in their portfolio. The typical way in how we collect data or assess students doesn't always give the full picture or true picture of growth in a student. I digital portfolio can tell me much more and it gives ownership to that student in how they want to showcase their learning and their successes. I think that makes their learning much more impactful and meaningful.

Digital portfolios seem like a great tool to use with students to help them reflect on their own learning. The 8 things that George Couros mentioned are all important! Overall, I think that digital portfolios support voice and self-assessment the most. Digital portfolios support voice because students can share their opinions, stories, and work in a way that is meaningful to them. Digital portfolios are so powerful because students are in control of what they share and how they share their ideas. Digital portfolios also support self-assessment because students have the opportunity to reflect back on what they included in their portfolio to help them grow as a learner. I think so many times students turn something into the teacher and do not have the opportunity to reflect back on their understanding. Digital portfolios would allow for that. As I was reading about digital portfolios, I kept thinking about how I could incorporate this in my math classroom. I thought for each math standard, students could post a picture of their math notebook to help them reflect on their math understanding or create a video of them teaching the concept. It would serve as a great review for others, but also a great reflection tool for students. Digital portfolios allow a safe space for students to share their thinking and thought process!

As noted in the articles we had to read for this module and in George Couros' sketchnote, time for reflection is a key element of learning. A digital portfolio whether it be a process portfolio, a showcase portfolio or some hybrid of the two, allows students to reflect on what is being learned. Not only can digital portfolios be valuable in this way for students, but also for teachers and administrators to think about how their practices have evolved overtime. I also think the idea of student voice is prominent in digital portfolios. When students have the opportunity to build and share their learning overtime, they can inspire and motivate other students. Some of the best learning takes place when we learn from one another.

Digital portfolios can absolutely support one or more of these look-fors from George Couros's infographic. First, creating a portfolio gives students a voice, by posting their work on a digital site like Google Sites, students are putting their voice out into the online world, which would feel so empowering to them. Second, it requires students to be reflective. What of their learning would they want to showcase in their portfolio? What lessons or assignments do they feel really reflects tremendous growth or effort. Additionally, the digital portfolio leaves room for innovation. This technology tool is one that students could make their portfolio as simple or as complex as they are comfortable with. Finally, the portfolio is a great self assessment tool that does an amazing way for the students to showcase their learning and reflect on all that they have learned in a unit, year, etc.
