The American Dream

The main meaning of The American Dream is that it doesn’t matter where you are from, what kind of family you grew up in, what school you went to or how much money your parents have. What matters is that if you work hard you can achieve succes. You can become anything, a rich business person or even a politician. The only thing you need is lots of hard work and dedication. Its up to you if you are succesfull in life, or if you are not.

Lets dive into the history of The American Dream. The American Dream goes back to the settlers of the United States. They were predominantly protestants, and believed in the philosophy that if people work hard, and are succesfull in life god is happy. According to their ethics, everyone is responsible for their own lives. Nobody should rely on anybody else to do their work for them. This mindset is what made The United States very appealing for people in foreign countries.

An example of someone who has lived up to the american dream is Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold Schhwarzenegger was born in Austria, he had a great passion for bodybuilding. He immigrated to the United States in 1968 where he persued his bodybuilding career. He did this by competing in Mr. Olympia, which he has won 6 times in his career. It didn’t take long before he started to perform in action movies such as The Terminator. In 2003, he even won the elections and became the governor of California. After getting re-elected in 2006, he left the office in 2011 and began to refocus on the entertainment industry.

Although the American Dream is not promised to everyone, it really is a key element within the American culture. It defines the mindset many people in America have and the willingnes of them to strive to achieve succes.

The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (1945)

More than 80 thousand people were killed on the 6th of August in 1945. After rising tensions between the US and Japan, the former president of the United States Harry Truman gave the authority to use atomic bombs to make Japan surrender. Japan wanted to capture oil-rich area’s in the East of Indies. As a result, the US wanted to prevent this from happening.

At 8:15 in the morning on the 6th of August in 1945, Enola Gay (the name of the pilot) dropped an atomic bomb called “Little Boy” on Hiroshima. The impact of the bomb was enormous, it had wiped out the whole city of Hiroshima and caused alot of casualties. The explosion resulted in to more than 80.000 deaths and 100.000 injuries. But the war was still far from over. 3 Days after the first bombing, the United States dropped a second bomb called the “Fat Man”. The city which was targeted this time was Nagasaki. At around 11:00 am, the bomb got dropped, causing mass destruction within the city. This time resulting in to more than 40.000 deaths.

Why were Hiroshima and Nagasaki targeted and not other cities? Well that is a good question. The main goal that Truman wanted to achieve was to make sure that Japan’s ability to fight wars would get destroyed. Herefore he chose Hiroshima and Nagasaki because there was alot of military production within those area’s. Destroying those cities would have a great impact on the military of Japan, while keeping the important cultural sites in other cities intact.
At that time, Hiroshima was still the seventh largest city in Japan. It was once the headquarters of the Second Army and one of Japan's most important military command posts. It is also the location of one of the largest military supply depots and the most important military and supply military transportation point.

The Native American Issue

1. What is the problem?
The problem is about Native Americans, who have been traumatized in history and still face many difficulties, such as discrimination. The theory claims that due to the intergenerational transmission of trauma of historical loss (such as loss of population, land, and culture), some Native Americans are experiencing symptoms of historical loss, such as depression, substance dependence, diabetes, childcare dysfunction, and unemployment.

2.How does is affect US society today?
The project “Reclaiming Native Truth” has published a study which was done in 2018 researching the discrimination of Native people the United States. According to that study 66% of the people do not think that Native-Americans are experiencing racial discrimination. Instead of putting effort into reducing racial discrimination towards Native Americans, the Americans are actually pretending as if these issues do not exist.

At this day and age age, Native Americans are way more vulnerable to police brutality than any other race. If we look at the numbers of sexual assault, we can see that Native woman are 2,5 times more likely to get raped or sexually assaulted in comparison to other races. If we look at at the number of violence, we can state that 97% of the Native-Americans have experienced violence by a non-Native person. This is a very high percentage and a very big problem. Violence and sexual assault should not be tolerated, especially not in a big country such as the United States. Another problem within the Native community is that the Native students tend to have the lowest graduation rates in comparison to other races. The suicide rates within this group is also the highest of any race in the United States. The chances of a Native student getting disciplined at school and getting incarcerated for minor crimes are also twice as much than white races.

US Elections

During the election days, Americans will all go and elect a new president. A common misconception is that many people think that the candidate with the most votes will win the elections, but it does not work that way. For example, Hillary clinton got the most votes in 2016 but lost the presidency to Donald Trump.

The American voters do not directly choose the next president. That sounds weird right? Thats because it is, its a bit more complicated than that. Instead of the American citizens directly choosing the next president, the Electoral College elects the president. This is a process where state-officials vote on a state-by-state basis for the next President.

Thr Electoral College was introduced by the founding fathers to prevent the American citizens to choose a dictator as president.

As we know, the united states is divided into different states. Every states has a certain amount electors. Depending on how big a state is and how much population it has, the amount of electors is being determined. In total there are 538 electors in the Unitsd states. For example, Texas has 38 electors, Alaska only got 3 electors and ohio got 18 electors.

So on the day of elections, the voters are not directly voting on who is going to be the president but are actually deciding which electors will be representing the states. As you may have guessed by now, it is extremely important for candidates to win states with alot of electors. Important states are: California (55 electors), Texas (38 electors) and Florida (29 electors).
The political party which wins in those states will have a huge advantage on winning the elections.

In 2006, Donald trump had a victory over Hillary clinton. Donald trump got a total of 304 electoral votes and Hillary Clinton got 224 electoral votes.
