In this essay plan ill outline the various aspects and key points that I will need to touch and expand upon in my complete History and Pioneers of Compositing Essay. Doing this will give me a clear and easy to understand plan that I can follow in the execution of the final essay. In order for this plan to be effective, most if not all of the relevant information pertaining to the essay including primary and secondary research, quotes and sources will be consolidated and structured in a way that is easy to view. Padlet facilitates this ease of readability allowing the individual docks/ pains to be moved around making for a much easier to structure layout for various information.

The Essay will begin with an introduction summarising what I will elaborate on, explain, and discuss in the essay. The essay itself will be broken into two main sections: historical/ history of compositing and Contemporary with a smaller section on future developments and predictions as to were the industry is headed compositing wise. In the historical section I will cover the key pioneers of the craft discussing who they are; where there from and the technique and process that they are most known. I further elaborate on the subject by examining a film as a case study, a film in which either they themselves worked on or the technique/ process they pioneered was used.

There are a few subjects and processes that I need to hit in order to not only meet the criteria but achieve a good grade. These processes are Matte generation through Keying and Rotoscoping, how they where done historically and their contemporary modern counterparts which have evolved as a result of advancements in technology and the never ending increasing needs and demands of the industry. These processes will be introduced and explained whilst discussing the pioneers that are associated with them. The contemporary aspect of these processes will be elaborated upon In the contemporary section of the essay in which I will not only discuss the modern workflow and techniques used to generate mattes through keying and Rotoscoping, but also how the modern way of doing things can be compared to how they were done historically: exploring how the modern process has improved upon the downfalls of its predecessor as well as any new problems that have sprung up as a result in the way these mattes are generated today.

After covering the core concepts of digital compositing ill will discuss the Two Methods in Which modern compositing software handles and manipulates image data: Node based and layer based. To do this ill cover how node based compositing works as well as how layer based compositing work: then elaborate on the advantages and disadvantages of each system and why the industry as I stands today has leaned much more towards the side of node-based as opposed to layer-based for compositing, with a few exceptions. *Mention ow layerbased systems are used at some point during production e.g. photoshop for matte painting: but how all assets are exported and a node-based system is used to combine all of the assets together collectively by the compositor to produce the resulting final image*. At this pint ill introduce Nuke and after effects. I will also make mention of competitor software of both node based and layer based software (nuke smoke, blackmajic fusion), (after effects and any competition

This will be nessesary to establish a logical narrative through this section of my essay. illustrating the key concepts of modern compositing and how they related to the proesses and techniques used in the past will set the basis for everything ele that will be discrussed in this section: Nukes' handling of alphas, matte generation rotoscoping, multiplication via merge node, premultiplication ect.
