One of the key takeaways was the idea of literacy as a fundamental skill rather than a luxury. This aspect stood out to me because students in socio-economically disadvantaged areas do not have proper access to equitable healthcare, education, and nutrition. “Illiteracy is the pipeline to prison" - This insight reveals how the lack of equitable reading instruction sets students up for failure and perpetuates cycles of imprisonment and poverty.

We need to ask ourselves, why did we become teachers, to help our students, not give up on them. Very interesting that the teacher would go away from the curriculum and do her own thing. Takes courage to take that risk. Too many teachers are going with the flow and not making a difference. It's challenging, but finding ways to connect with our students is priority so they feel safe enough to follow our guidance.
