Unit 1 AS1 - Abstracted image

Shapes and letters were used for this abstracted image. I used small ovals for the clouds, lines for the trees, small s's for water, small x's for grass, and the rest shading. I decided on this method to break up the various sections going on in the image, for the viewer to more easily understand.

For this non-representational watercolor painting, I decided to use the colors to break up the picture and convey the message from the original photo. With blue for the clouds, orange, red, and yellow mixtures for the trees, a darker blue for the water, grey for the sidewalk, a darker green for the grass, and a black line to the right as an interesting element for the viewer to figure out.

Positive Space Drawing. This leaf was from the park and is to actual size on the sheet. I decided to use a leaf as it had a nice size, shape, and curves.

For the negative space drawing, I noticed the shapes surrounding the leaf on the upper right side, almost looking like the side of a face, and the upper left side if it was turned upside down - looking like a mouth open. I like the negative space drawing better as to me it seems a bit more interesting.

For this drawing I found some challenges with transitions and shading, especially around the highlighted area and the shadows. The cast shadow shape is a bit off, but overall, I learned some techniques that will help me improve such as starting lighter, then going back and shading over to create more contrast. Also, with starting around the highlighted area then doing the cast shadow last.

I found using the sharpie to be a bit easier than the pencil, but more challenging in some areas such as with the transition area from the highlight to the shadow. The cast shadow is a little off as well, but I think from a far it gets the dimension across and will continue to practice the techniques of creating value.

Unit 5 AS1 - Emotion

We'll call this painting, "heartbroken and heading underwater." This painting represents all of the emotions that I felt when I broke up with my longtime boyfriend from high school after finding out that he cheated on me. It was one of the most intense feelings that I had ever felt of heart break and betrayal (haven't again since then, thankfully :)) But as you can see - there's a big broken heart, with fire burning representing love and destruction as well as my car at the time sinking under water because I was driving back home in some major downpour of rain after finding out, with tears streaming down my eyes while hyperventilating so really felt in a way like I was drowning and going under emotionally. Little did I know at the time, that the future would be bright, joyful, and magical - with the rainbow towards the far back, the sun shining, and two little hearts representing my husband and son.

Unit 6 AS1 - Recycle Robot

Some of you may have heard of the old cartoon shows "The Jetsons" or "Jem and the Holograms?" My robot kind of reminded me of Rosey the Robot from "The Jetsons," so I decided to name this robot "Jem" representing Jem's personal assistant from the cartoon show, "Jem and the Holograms." She helps with chores around the house, takes calls, and is just a good friend with a spark of wit in her. I mostly used cardboard for the structure of the body, neck, head, and mouth. Then used canned vegetable cans for the eyes as well as seltzer cans for the ears, buttons, and antennae. There are blown up packaging stuffing for the arms and two wine bottles for the legs, along with Styrofoam for the sliding feet. The rest of the details are caps from cans and pouches.

I decided on a pencil for this assignment as I love using pencils rather than pens and have started to collect different ones from places I visit just for fun. I found through this assignment that a pencil has many different textures, angles, views, etc., and that there is much beauty, imagination and appreciation in the process of taking photos, viewing, editing, and processing them.
