When a human is bitten by a mosquito that carries the parasite, they are infected and the protozoans multiply thousands of times in the human body over a period of days. The protozoans attack and destroy red blood cells that carry oxygen. This reduces blood iron and causes high fevers lasting 1-2 hours.
