What Causes Malaria and How Does it Spread?

Malaria is caused by the protozoan Plasmodium, carried by the Anopheles mosquito. When a human is bitten by a mosquito that carries the parasite, they are infected and the protozoans multiply thousands of times in the human body over a period of days. The protozoans attack and destroy red blood cells that carry oxygen. This reduces blood iron and causes high fevers lasting 1-2 hours. Another uninfected mosquito can bite an infected human and become infected itself, thus spreading the disease to more people in a never-ending cycle.
