Atomic Number is equal to the number of protons said atom has, while Atomic Mass refers to the weight of the atom, due to the neutrons weight the atomic mass will always be higher than the atomic number and, due to the existence of isotopes the given atomic mass of an element is the average weight of each one of their isotopes, to calculate this value each isotope's weight is multiplied by its rate of appearance in nature and the result is divided by the number of isotopes that atom has.
