Regan Warner Literacy Timeline by Regan W

Through certain experiences, I have shaped how outside sources have not only shaped the way I write and read, but also shaped who I have become as a person. This timeline has shown me that it is the little things in my education that help to shape the kind of writer I have become.

Personal College Application Essays

When writing my essays for the Common App, I was able to truly dive deep into a topic that had truly affected and touched me in the same time period I had to write my essays. I was able to share my experience with my dad's cancer story, and finally feel truly passionate about a topic I was writing about. This did not feel like an essay that I had to write, but instead an essay that I got to write. The essay meant and still means so much to me moving forward into college.

Job with Writing

My junior year of high school, all the way until right before leaving college, I had the opportunity to be a sales assistant at my job, which meant a lot of writing and talking to outside companies. My job was to book events with other companies and within this job, I got to communicate not only in person, but through persuasive writing with many different companies and learn how to network with my writing in a professional setting, which is something that most high schoolers do not get to experience. This taught me that writing is also very important in a professional setting and the way you portray yourself through it.

Sophomore Year Writing

During my sophomore year of high school, I hit major "writer's block" due to an unfortunately picky English teacher. In my Pre AP English class, we had many different writing assignments. I worked very hard and gave my best work on every assignment we had to complete, however my teacher graded so much on style and specifics that his edits and critiques took away from the message and voice I was trying to convey in every assignment. This made me hate every paper I had to write, as well as make me feel unconfident in my writing and self.

Early Readings to Shape

When I was in middle school, I read the Hunger Games series, and reading those books really helped to expand my imagination and creativity. I remember this series being the first books that I actually enjoyed reading. I was never an avid reader as a child, even though I was in advanced reading, which was ironic. After enjoying these books, I feel as though I was able to think, read, and write more creatively as well as motivate myself to try to enjoy other books that I read in school.

Early Childhood Writings

When I was little I would love to write in a journal that my grandma bought me when I was about 6 years old. In the journal I wrote about every little thing that I noticed or experienced as a child, like a diary. It is funny to see the way I spelled words and formed sentences, and it's funny to see the kinds of things I would write about. I still have the journal and it is fun to look back on, because I can remember some of the things I wrote about in it.
