         <description><![CDATA[<div>My name is Margarita Gerouki and I am Greek. I have been a primary school teacher for many years, more than 20 actually! However, the last five I work as an educational adviser. There are 21 primary schools under my supervision. These are to be found in rural and semi-urban areas in Chania prefecture, in Crete. Some of my schools will receive refugee children. So they say...<br>I am a mother of a 12 year old boy myself. <br>Moreover, I have lived 12 years in a foreign country. Even under the best of conditions... <em>nostos</em> is there! I am a cosmopolitan! I am a citizen of the world! I fight for human rights. The integration of migrant students for me is a matter of respect to human rights. Plain and Clear!</div>]]></description>

I received an excellent treatment but I have not stopped thinking...pain, insecurity, fear about the future, fear about my body...Luckily it will pass. It could have been worse!          <description><![CDATA[<div>This is very possible to happen. In my opinion it is necessary to happen. Schools prepare young people for the future world. A basic need is for our young people to grow and become informed and responsible citizens. It would have been a great neglect if we (educators and policy makers) wouldn't take into consideration the interplay of current factors in terms of immigration and refugee issues for the developing and encouraging new approaches in schools.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In Greece they try to establish a parallel model of education for the refugee children. Although this is not always without objections from local communities (not so much from educators though). Immigrant children also enroll in schools following an submertion and/or immersion model. This affects mainly those children whose families arrived not as asylum seekers but for work related financial reasons.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In many primary schools with students of immigrant background there is a "reception class". The "mission" of the "reception class teacher" is to help individually or in small groups students of immigrant background develop their academic skills particularly in Greek language. There is also material for teaching Greek as a foreign and/or second language available. This material is available online and in hard copies. These teachers have a lot of flexibility  to tailor made their approaches. From experience I should say that most teachers in Greece are not trained to develop their own lesson plans therefore the "reception class teachers" often feel helpless and not at all motivated. Those who are motivated can help a lot their students and their students' families.  </div>]]></description>

The basic lines of RespAct project are very clear and therefore feasible. I believe it could be adopted to local Greek levels.          <description><![CDATA[<div>There are no refugee students in my schools yet. They said they will sent some. There are however a number of immigrant students, either whose families have been for years in Greece, most of the children were born in the country. Also, every year there is a small number of newly arrived immigrant students. Respect and understanding of the immigrant students culture and experiences is the corner stone of teachers' behavior. In my experience most children try to adapt to their new situation. If they are met with warm feelings and understanding half the way is already walked!</div>]]></description>

In Greece most institutions that offer such help are understaffed. The second most important is teachers' attitudes.
