What exactly is a gap year? A period of time that people use to explore areas of interest, gain work experience or travel and expand their cultural horizons before continuing their educational studies (College, University or etc.).

If I want to go to college after my gap year experience, should I apply before or after I take a gap year? Applying to college before taking a gap year may be best practice; especially if the student is going abroad for their gap year. (Speak with your counselor or college admissions to gain more insight).

Can I still get financial aid and scholarships for college after doing a gap year? If a student applied and qualified for financial aid before their gap year, as long as their financial situation has not changed; students' should receive similar accommodations when they re-apply the following year.

Are there affordable options for a gap year? Many domestic and international programs charge little to no fees. There are programs that offer free housing and food in turn for volunteer work (keep in mind, it is a lot of hard work).
Suggestions:
-AmeriCorps programs
-Habitat for Humanity
-World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF)

What do college admissions officials think of gap years? Over the past few years, colleges have become more accepting of the gap year (some colleges are even encouraging their students to take one). This would be a great question to ask a college admission board or counselor (for the gap year decision making process).
