The kid in the room trying to sleep with loud Vietnamese music in the background. My parents would play karaoke loud (like my dad had two giant speakers that was as tall as me and sound system) and the kids had to sleep through it. Until one day, the kids were recruited to sing for my dad. After watching this documentary, I didn’t realize we were singing newwave music. Modern Talking was our favorite.

I’m really curious, how were you able to find all the footage? The archival clips, the personal moments, the music, it was all so rich and layered, especially considering so much of it came from cassette tapes and VHS. The effort and care it must have taken to track all of that down is genuinely impressive.

My mom was and still is a manicurist who works all day. She would work late nights since she was the breadwinner for a family of 7 while also sending money back to family in Vietnam. This led me to be rebellious and resentful.

A deeper appreciation of our story

The whole film resonated deeply with my childhood.
However, watching New Wave truly shifted how I understand Vietnamese culture and identity. Growing up, I used to think we were just copycats, and honestly, I didn’t want to identify with that. But this documentary helped me realize that what I once saw as imitation was actually innovation: a bold, creative attempt to make something new out of limited space and visibility. It was a generation experimenting, adapting, and expressing themselves in a world that didn’t fully see or understand them.

Thank you to the generation before me, for living, creating, and paving the way. Because of you, I’ve been able to experience both the weight and the beauty of that journey. This film allowed me to have a deeper sense of connection.

When I was a kid . . .

Last Dec I had a text convo with my HS classmates (Class of ‘87), asking what they remembered about the Vietnamese refugees who arrived one Guam. They shared this small piece.

What I remembered as a child (circa 1975) was walking through Asan Park at dusk, glimpses of military tents etched in my memory. I can only wonder that we were there to donate to the refugees. My one classmate recalled handing candy to the young children.

Our stories are interconnected, though we may not realize it until much later.

This was (and still is for me) a practice my parents, especially my mom, insisted upon, to capture personal memories, our history, our very own stories. They tell all about life’s journey. It’s important to ask questions of our elders, family before they leave this earth. Be curious, I always say.

Personally, the moment your mom was trying to express her apology and explain her absence was extremely moving. It seemed like she had so much bottled up that she needed to express. At the same time it was what you needed to hear from her. Happy that you both are on a path of healing and reconciliation.

The scene where your daughter called your mom “ba ngoai” and then when your daughter took a picture of you and your mom. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
