Using the word chandelier adds a positive and sophisticated mood to this section of the story. The author used the phrase fancy chandelier so we can learn how Esperanza's great-grandfather views her great-grandmother. We learn that he loved her and really wanted to marry her. He values her and sees her as a delicate, elegant, desirable woman. The message would have been significantly different if the author said, “As if she were a sack of potatoes.”

I can infer that they are wearing these shoes for both church and to play because they can't afford any other shoes. This helps the reader understand what the family is like and that they don't have much money. This adds more information about the family to the story.
