Merchant Anton van Leeuwenhoek Came up with the idea of making his own microscope. When he did build one, he went ahead to study everything, even his own teeth. What he discovered was a gigantic step in science. He saw little creatures, now known as bacteria, in his teeth. But, he called them animalcules, because they looked like little animals.
