The structure of the text helps to develop various themes and a literary purpose by, consistently using different types of imagery as well as Dantes point of view for us readers to permeate what is really happening in the text. As we read about Dante's journey into hell and how he descends into each of the nine rings, there is of course one common theme that can be seen. The theme of the surroundings being described as "dark, "melancholy", "miserable", etc. The negative emotion and surroundings conveyed in this text always tie to Dante himself as well. On page 130, there is an image that is captioned, "Ye have made yourselves a god of gold and silver." The image itself is pretty gruesome which is who I believe Dante and Virgil observing the rows of people who are just submerged underground only having their feet left hanging out. Seeing this horridly sight causes Dante to feel a sense of despair. "When our own image near me I beheld Distorted so, the weeping of the eyes Along the fissure bathed the hinder parts. Truly I wept, leaning upon a peak." Just by reading and analyzing this quote alone as a reader, based on its use of descriptive words, it really helps to strengthen the text by emphasizing how Dante is really feeling and coming to a realization of what's happening right before his eyes. In a text with no sort of figurative language or imagery, how are we as readers going to be drawn in when there's no creative outlet to utilize our own imaginations. Seeing and feeling the text also allows us to grow a much more deeper connection to the text than we think.
