We will practice hearing and saying patterns in words as well as hearing, saying and producing rhyming words.

We will begin to link sounds to their corresponding letters.  We will begin to use our knowledge of sounds and letters to read simple 2 and 3 letter words.

We will invent our own stories and characters to share with others.

We will learn to take turns when listening and will follow simple instructions.

We are looking forward to a happy and fun-filled year of playing and learning in and out of the classroom. In P.E, we will develop skills in balance, fitness, eye/hand co-ordination and eye/foot co-ordination. We are learning to move our bodies confidently, as well as exploring how to manage and control our bodies and are finding out how to use and share space.

We are developing our class charter to ensure our class is a happy and safe place to play and learn, as well as making sure we are promoting feelings of confidence and respect for ourselves and others.

Sustainable Development Goals

Through learning about the sustainable development goals, the children will develop an understanding of social awareness, solidarity and care for our planet and its people.

We will learn to identify, recognise and count numbers from 0 – 20 and beyond, and to count backwards within 10 or 20 (or beyond).

We will learn to make finger patterns to 10, both when seeing our fingers and when hiding our fingers (with bunny ears!)

Using a wide range of both indoor and outdoor resources, we will learn to identify what comes before and after when copying and continuing a pattern using 2D shape.

We will learn to be aware of the different roles of adults in our school community and to recognise those people who can help us in our class and in our school.

French

We are learning to count to 10 and name the days of the week.  We will also learn basic greeting such as bonjour and au revoir.   

A wee reminder that it is dress down day tomorrow so children can wear anything they choose, although we are planning a forest session for tomorrow too, so loose clothing for climbing etc. would be useful! :)

We are also looking forward to our first class visit to Ratho Library tomorrow to borrow some books for the class :)

We used lots of apples from the school garden to make apple crumble with Ms Martin this week! Through this learning activity we learned about healthy eating, maths when we measured the ingredients and used out fine motor skills to cut and stir! We will have a taste test on Monday 😄🍎

We will continue to use our fingers to "fingerspell" words using the sounds we know. We will also begin reading and spelling tricky (common)words.

In handwriting, we will continue to work on developmentally appropriate letter formation, using printed or cursive formations, to write sounds and simple words.

In storywriting, we will develop our learning in rhyming by writing a Fireworks poem.

We will work on our talking skills by performing a part in the nativity performance.

In Maths we will learn about time, including sequencing the days of the week, months of the year and learn to read analogue and digital o’clock times and represent times on a digital display or clock face.

Through dance we are learning how to move our bodies in a creative way to a variety of music styles and in gymnastics we will learn basic moves with a focus on travelling, rolling, jumping and balancing.

This term, as part of our learning in phonics, we are continuing to hear and say sounds made by single letters, or two letters together (digraphs) and to use our knowledge of these sounds to read and spell words. We will begin to read a variety of different texts and will answer questions to help predict what will happen next in a story. We will also explore some comprehension activities to check our understanding of what we are reading.

To continue focussing on our addition strategies, we will be practicing the counting on strategy, where we start with the larger number and then “count on” using the other number to get to the sum. Some of us will also be working on subtraction problems.

We will also continue working on mental addition strategies, by doubling numbers up to 10 and beyond, to be able to solve addition problems to 10 mentally.

We will split a whole number into smaller parts and explain that equal parts are the same size and share out a group of items equally into smaller groups.

Money

We will count out the correct number of 1p coins to pay for an item in our role play shop. We are learning to identify and order all coins up to £2.

We will experiment with everyday items as units of measure e.g. hands, feet, lollipop sticks, cubes to investigate sizes and amounts. We will learn to use appropriate language to compare everyday items by length, height, weight and capacity ("how many …) and put objects in order according to weight, length, height and capacity.

In Primary 1, children will learn ‘my body belongs to me’. This involves learning about different body parts, personal space, modesty and privacy (e.g. closing toilet doors). We will discuss how bodies change as they grow (e.g. getting taller and things we can do now that we couldn’t do before).

We are planning a Forest Fun session tomorrow afternoon, so children should come dressed for warmth and comfort and mud! Children, where possible, should also have their own wellies to be kept in school. We do have some spare pairs we can lend out!

Physical Education: Athletics

·         We will learn to move at different speeds – slowly, steadily and quickly.

This term we will be learning:

Reading

·         We are continuing to hear and say sounds made by one, or two or three letters together, and to use our knowledge of these sounds and letters to read words.

·         We are learning to read aloud familiar texts, learning about simple punctuation as we investigate these texts.  

·         We are learning to use context clues, such as pictures, to support our reading and understanding of different texts.

·         We are developing an awareness of some features of fiction and non-fiction texts and are learning to find information in a non-fiction text to learn new things about out IDL topic.

Writing

·         Following the Talk for Writing programme, we will create story maps of familiar stories and write the story using legible lowercase and uppercase letters. 

·         We will also focus on alternate endings in our story writing, considering the characters and the plot.

• We will make an information booklet on our favourite minibeast or plant, whilst making an attempt to use a capital letter and a full stop in at least one sentence. We will leave a space between words in our sentences.

• We will recognise the difference between a vowel and a consonant.

Spelling

·         We will continue to work through our Literacy Rich spelling programme developing our ability to spell words.

·         We will be encouraged to remember the spelling rules applied to each new sound taught.

·         We will continue to work through our Literacy Rich spelling programme to spell a range of tricky words.

Listening and Talking:

·         In class, we will be continuing with opportunities to take part in Show and Tell. We will build confidence when presenting to our peers and this allows us to ask and respond to questions as well as show respect through good listening.

Our learning in Numeracy and Maths this term will cover:

·         We will count on and back and to add a range of numbers within 10, 20, 30 and beyond.

·         We will compare the amount of objects in one group to help estimate the quantity of objects in other groups.  We will check our estimate by counting.

Topic Maths: Information Handling

·         We will record information in a variety of ways.

·         We will use a diagram or chart to find one or more pieces of information.

Our RME learning this term will include:

 New Baby Customs

·         We will be learning all about new baby naming customs.

·         We will become more aware of the importance of celebrations, festivals and customs in religious people’s lives.

French

·         We will continue to embed our French counting skills to 10.
