Some major victories were the occupation of Alcatraz Island in 1969 and the “Trail of Broken Treaties” March on Washington. In 1973 it was internationally recognized as a civil rights group and picked up stories on newspapers including the New York Times on their unfair treatment from the government.

Across America the Asian American Political Alliance (AAPA) were groups formed by students at the University of California, Yale, Columbia, UCLA, University of Illinois, Oberlin College, and the University of Michigan. A quote made by activist Gordon Lee in a 2003 simplifies the issues addressed by the movement,“The more we examined our collective histories, the more we began to find a rich and complex past.
