Finders Keepers by Will Lipkind and Nicolas Mordvinoff

In this picture book, Lipkind and Mordvinoff demonstrate the importance of sharing, kindness, and friendship. The main belief they seem to be sharing with readers is to not allow the small things to get in the way of friendship. During this story, two dogs are arguing over who owns the bone since one of them saw it first and the other touched it first. After asking strangers who owns the bone, they decide to share it.

In real life, it can be hard to figure out who gets the credit for a new idea or finding. Instead of arguing over who helped the most or did the best work, it would be wise to share the credit and to continue being friends rather than become enemies.

Throughout a child's life, it is better to advise them to share and be kind than to fight tooth and nail over something relatively insignificant. It is not worth losing friends over the ownership of a toy and it is best to take the high road in these situations.

The Story of Jumping Mouse by John Steptoe

In this book, Steptoe seems to encourage children to be nice to everyone they meet. In general, it is a good idea to be kind to everyone because you never know who may return your kindness with kindness of their own, whatever form of generosity that may be.

In reality, being a kind person will get you further in life than being mean or ungrateful. A common narrative in pop culture is where the main character has a new job and acts either incredibly kind or absolutely terribly to a stranger. This stranger turns out to be their new boss and the way the protagonist treats them is reflected in how the boss treats them.

Throughout childhood, kids will meet new people every day and the way they treat them is often a reflection of their character. In order to raise kind and caring children, parents should teach them to be nice to everyone they meet, just as Jumping Mouse was kind to all the animals he met along his journey.

Make Way For Ducklings by Robert McCloskey

In this picture book, McCloskey highlights how the kindness of strangers can result in friendship and even be life changing. During this story, a family of ducks receives help from strangers who are nice enough to assist them in crossing the busy streets of Boston. This kindness results in the duck family befriending a policeman.

Children will meet numerous people in their everyday life, and this book is not saying that they should approach everyone, because that could be dangerous, but at the very least they can be polite. And when you think about it, all of your friends were strangers to you at one point, so at the very least a polite smile to a stranger brightens up their day. And at the very most, you could attain a new friend.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio

In this book, Palacio seems to be saying that no matter who you run into in life, regardless of what they look like, their cultural differences, or their background, you should always be kind. No one wants to be bullied or picked on, so you should not bully anyone else. This is often referred to as the golden rule: treat others how you want to be treated.

I reality, people often feel threatened by others, usually for no reason at all. The way that people react to this feeling is what defines them as a person. They can either choose to defend themselves, which results in ostracizing the other person usually by means of bullying, or they can choose to be nice to one another and decide to be friendly instead of gaining a rival.

In relation to childhood, Palacio is kind of calling out parents who may try to shield their children from the harsh realities of the world and who surround their children solely with other children that look like them and have the same cultural background. This can be detrimental because children need to learn that these differences are normal and that everyone is unique. No matter what differences you have with a person, everyone deserves to be treated with respect and kindness.

Stick Dog by Tom Watson

In this book, Watson tries to convey the importance of friendship and kindness. Throughout his book, he shows that loyal friends are the best kinds of friends and that you should always treat your friends with kindness. The way to accomplish life long friendship is through how well you treat the other person and how they treat you in return.

In real life, there are plenty of friendships that fall apart over some small argument. Eventually, the friends will have argued for so long they forgot what started the whole thing, but they cannot stop fighting. If they treated each other with kindness and respect, they would be able to forgive one another and move on from their disagreement.

Throughout childhood, children are going to get annoyed with their friends, just as Stick Dog did. But they must remember to let the small things go and forgive their friends for their trivial annoyances. And by treating a friend with kindness, children can ensure that they do not lose their friends over unimportant actions.

In this movie, the writers seem to be trying to persuade people to stick by their friends no matter what. You should always help your friends in their greatest times of need. That is what friendship is all about.

In real life, it can be easy to make excuses to not help a friend in need. You may think "that's their problem" or "I have my own problems to deal with," but being a good friend is about supporting your friends. Although you may not be able to physically help in a tough situation, you can always be there supporting your friend through the rough patches.

Children need to learn from an early age that friendship is more than just sharing toys and playing together at recess. Friendships that last a lifetime are built on a mountain of trust and mutual support of the paths that your friends take, whether or not you think they made the best decision. Morally and emotionally helping friends in need is usually reciprocated with helping you when you need it most too. This is the meaning of friendship: having one another's back.

Shrek

The writers of this movie seem to be saying that no matter what someone looks like, they should be treated with kindness. When Fiona finds out that Shrek is an ogre, she is quite mean to him even though she is part ogre herself. She thinks that she is better than him and this makes him treat her with little respect in return.

In real life, everyone makes judgements about others based on their looks, how they dress, how they talk, etc. Often when people meet those who they believe are superior to them, they treat them with lots of respect and kindness. But when they meet someone who seems to be "less" then them, they give little thought to how they act and often treat them poorly.

Prejudice is a terrible thing, and children should not be taught to judge someone based on superficial observations. They should only judge the character of a person after they have gotten to know them. I think that this movie does a great job of exemplifying this and it is a good lesson for children to learn.

In this movie, Rapunzel is nice to everyone she meets. Even when she walks into a bar full of grizzly looking guys, she treats them with kindness and respect, which is then returned with kindness and loyalty. I think the writers seem to be saying that you should always put your best foot forward, no matter who you meet.

In reality, being nice to others will get you further in life than being rude. And often how you treat others and how they perceive your actions is how they will be returned to you. In other words, if you are mean to someone, they are most likely going to be mean to you. But if you are nice, they will respond with kindness.

This applies to children as well. If the new kid in school is mean to everyone, no one will want to be their friend and will most likely treat the new child poorly. Even if the child eventually changes their ways, it will take a lot more effort and time to befriend the other children.
