Harry Potter was one of the first books I got lost in, it was a place for me to escape to. Over the years I used reading as my safe place, and I believed this helped me to increase my vocabulary, and in every book I believe there is a lesson to be learned. I believe we are always learning if we are always reading.

Natural World

My love for the environment came from my dad. He taught me how to fish, and took me camping, and while on these trips even though he didn't teach me lessons about the environment through speech, he showed me through his actions. He respected the environment and his love for it, made it easier for me to appreciate the natural world. It was because of him that I chose to be a Biologist. My dad has taught me many life lessons over the years, but the greatest gift he ever gave me was to inspire me to care and make a difference in the world. Knowing what he taught me has inspired me to teach younger generations about the natural world and what we can do to help protect it.

Travel/Culture

Throughout my years I have had the opportunity to travel many places. I believe travelling to a new city or country allows for the opportunity to learn about that place, the culture, the people, but it also allows you to learn about yourself because we have to learn to adapt to our new surroundings. My German teacher in high school gave me the opportunity to go on a student exchange for 3 months, and in that short amount of time I learned a great deal, I also hope I can provide my future students with opportunities such as this one.

Poetry

Robert Frost's poem 'The Road Not Taken.' was one of the first poems I read. It opened up my mind to a whole new world of literature. In poetry I found solace and a place to put down my emotions when I couldn't verbalize how I was feeling. It also open my mind to know that there is a deeper meaning underneath the poem than what is being read, that you have to try to interpret what message the poet is trying to convey. I still love poetry and I hope to get my future students interested in it, as a way for them to put down how they're feeling. TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;	5

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,	10

Perseverance

Math and I equal disaster. Ever since I can remember I have had problems in Math, even throughout University. However my parents taught me to never give up, and without that encouragement I would not be where I am today.

This was the first novel book I ever read. Up until Grade 5 I struggled with reading comprehension, my grade 3-4 teacher took an interest in this and she found a book she thought I might be interested in. I loved this book, if it wasn't for her, I probably wouldn't be the avid reader I am today. I can only hope that when I take this type of interest in my students learning that I am able to be as successful as my grade 3 teacher was with me.

I believe having fun is the key to success in teaching an learning! If fun is not encountered while learning then I believe we are less likely to retain the information being taught.
