The animation only has the initial step. From this, I can see that it jumps high in the air on the first leap, which could be seen as exaggeration. If the next steps were to follow the same up and down, it would be an exaggerated, but believable, run.

Very good work produced here Karl. The actions are clearly communicated but there are a few points to address to make your work stronger.

To improve:
  • Use the elbow and knee controls to help you make your poses clearer from all angles. Remember when animating for game, the poses need to be clear from all angles.
  • Set breakdown keys for the arms on frames 16 and 19.
  • Carry the momentum of the run into the jump; the character seem to come to a stop before the jump.
  • Pose on frame 44 is very good, you could make it stronger by raising the head on frame 40 to counter the downward motion of the body. Do the same on the landing key on frame 60.
  • Fix the sliding of the feet from frame 60 to 64.

Very good animation overall Dale, the poses communicate the actions very clearly, well done. Just a few points to address to make the animation stronger.

To improve:
  • The start of the run needs to be fixed. Lean the character forward slowly into the run. You started doing that a bit but it is not very clear.
  • On frame 26, lower the head to counter the upward momentum of the jump - remember that contrasts always make the actions clearer. Do the same for frame 38.
  • I particularly like how you broke down the pose on frame 39. You need to go back and break down the rest of the keys in this manner. For example, what are the arms doing when the character is ‘recovering’ from the jump? Start to think about Drag and follow-through.

To improve;
  • The right foot on frame 13 needs to be stationary - it is sliding back as it is. When you start a run, your foot on the ground does not slide forward - try it yourself to see if this is the case.
  • Grab the ‘hip_CTRL’ and lean the character forward more to communicate the idea of forward momentum and the arms could be ‘pushed’ more. Remember the goal here is believability.
  • The arms need to counter each other on all of the poses - look at frame 19.
  • Fix the right leg on frame 28 - it looks like it has collapsed.
  • The transition from the run to the jump needs to be sorted. It is not clear where one starts and stops; fix it. Refer to the keys on the examples I have provided and refer to the Animator’s Survival book if unsure.
  • The timing on the ‘in-air’ key is very good Angus, this is particularly very well done. Improve this by ‘dragging’ the head to make this more believable. Also, make a not

Good keys set for this task Ryan.
To improve;
  • Push the poses in the ‘golden positions’ a bit more - exaggerate the poses for them to read. When the character lands on frame 18 for example, there is no communication of weight there. When he makes contact after the ‘in-air’ key, he needs to take the weight on the front leg before he ‘springs’ off again.
  • Make sure there is always a bit of a ‘bend’ in the knees and elbows to avoid the look of hyper-extension in the limbs. I do appreciate this could be tricky in a rig like this because of its design but you need to be mindful of this.
  • To help communicate the believability of the run action, you need to start thinking about what the head is doing when the character is running and jumping. Typically, when the body is down, the head is up and vice-versa. Make use of reference videos online or take videos of yourself performing the action.
  • The arms on frame 43 should still be in the air and the heel of the character needs to be making contact - looks broken as it is at the moment and the right leg looks totally baffling. Remember you need to have all of the poses ‘read’ clearly.

To improve:
  • Make the keys that show the character landing after the ‘in-air’ pose show him taking his body weight a bit more.
  • The transition from the run to a jump is not clear - use an anticipation key to clarify that. Create a pose that clearly shows he is about to jump.
  • The jump needs to be fixed, showing a clear start and end point. What you have submitted shows a jump on the spot.
  • When the character lands from the jump, there needs to be a pose that shows him taking his body-weight - down position.

You have produce good work here Dylan. However, there are elements of the task missing.

To improve;
  • Make sure the character is running, not walking.
  • The arms need to counter the legs, when in motion. If unsure, refer to the Animator’s Survival kit book and the example maya file I have provided you.
  • The anticipation of the character on frame 31 needs to be ‘,staggered’ - what you have got here is too symmetrical; meaning the legs are doing the same action at the same time and so are the arms - 37, 39… 
  • Use the elbow  and knee controls to help the believability of your keys.
  • Use the head of the character to emphasize the illusion of weight.
  • And finally, set keys for the character to settle at the end of the motion.

  • Run and Jump
  • The right arm of the rig is broken.(Download new rig if you are unable to fix it.)
  • Give the character some time - 8 frames minimum before the first key. This is a good rule of thumb, to prepare the audience for the action and for it to read.
  • You are missing the ‘in-air’ key.
  • Adjust the timing of the jump; it is too quick. Think about the weight of the character, especially when it lands. There needs to be a contact ‘breakdown’ key before both feet are off the floor in the jump.
  • If unsure, refer to the examples that I have provided.

The key poses are good. The use of anticipation at the start of the run is particularly very well handled.

To improve:
  • Animate the arms - remember, the arms counter what the legs are doing.
  • What you started doing with the head on frame 34 is very good. To make it stronger, raise the head on frame 40 to contrast the downward motion of the character. The rule of thumb is to have the different body parts countering each other, to make the actions more believable.
  • Stagger the contacts of the feet on frame 37; so both legs don’t make contact with the ground at the same time and watch out for your arcs.
  • Give the character more time to settle in the final pose.
