The Kurdish Genocide was a tragic event in history. It was mainly between Iraq and the Kurds, the crimes committed against the Kurds were due to things such as ethnicity, religion or land. The Genocide occurred around 1986 and up to 1991.
The picture below is an image of the Kurds fleeing from a mass execution in 1991.

The Kurds were treated awfully during the Kurdish Genocide

The Kurds, being it was a genocide, were treated horrendously by Iraq. A book, by Noah Berlatsky and Frank Chalk called: Genocide and Persecution states that "During long years of monarchic rule, the Kurds were subjected to oppression of two kinds...shared with the Iraqi people poverty, ignorance, disease and heavy handed tyranny,; second they underwent ethnic discrimination and deprivation of national rights." This shows how the Kurds were treated terribly, whether it was being stripped of their rights or not getting political representation. The book goes on to say that "Mass graves were dug for the Kurdish victims after mass executions...use of chemical weapons." Using chemical weapons and performing the mass executions proves that the Kurds were treated quite bad during the Kurdish Genocide. A book; called Genocide and Persecution:The Kurds by Noah Berlatsky and Frank Chalk claims that, "During long years of monarchic rule, the Kurds were subjected to oppression of two kinds...shared with the Iraqi people poverty, ignorance's, disease and heavy handed tyranny,; second they underwent ethnic discrimination and deprivation of national rights. These conditions bred Kurdish revolts" This shows how the Kurds were treated but also how they would rebel against Iraqi rule. When the Kurds were said to be deprived of their rights it proves how the Kurds were mistreated during the Kurdish Genocide.
The image below shows a Kurdish city being attacked with lethal chemical gas by Iraqis. The effects of the chemical warfare were devastating.

The role of the Kurds in the Kurdish Genocide was the Victim

The role of the Kurds in the Kurdish Genocide was the victim, according to an article on ABC Clio about the Kurdish Democratic Party states that "The Kurds were an ethnic group of people who, because of their ethnicity, were dragged into a war that would later become a genocide." This explains the role of the Kurds in the genocide and why the genocide against them began. The article also asserts that, "Conflicts (with Baghdad) were primarily over land, taxes, military services from the population and ethnic and religious differences." Baghdad was the Iraqi capital, the Iraqi capital targeting Kurds and fighting with them about those things would show that the Kurds played the victim in the genocide. A book Genocide and Persecution: The Kurds by The Kurds by Noah Berlatsky and Frank Chalk states that:
"Unrestrained violence including atrocities against both civilians and combatants was widespread." The violence committed against the Kurds shows how they played the role as the victim. The book also mentions that many Kurdish cities and villages were ruined, further proving how the Kurds were the victim after having that done to them.
The photo below shows a large group of Kurds in a concentration camp, who are fighting for their rights, Kurds during the genocide were dehumanized, meaning that they weren't thought as human and weren't seen to deserve equal rights.

For a large portion of the genocide Iranians in Iran helped to aid the Kurds in their fight against the Iraqi. Iranians would help supply troops for the Kurdish. In the U.S meanwhile Ronald Reagan was elected president, the U.S would later respond to the genocide as well as Iran.

The U.S, although not having a major role in the genocide was indirectly blamed for letting such a genocide happen and some think they made it even worse than it was. The U.S was said to have helped make chemical weapons with Iraq, as the U.S President saw Iraq as a good ally. When Kurdish people were being tormented by Iraq with chemical weapons the U.S simply didn't say a thing about it. After the war though, we helped pass a genocide prevention act, that was when the U.S president had agreed they'd been used.
