What is the best protocol to follow if a writer personally confesses to using AI during their appointment? Should you continue tutoring like normal, or should you talk with the writer about the potential ramifications of using AI?

For Writing Fellows most teachers explicitly tell us to communicate with them if we suspect AI use. Especially since these are often already turned in assignments I think that's valid, are we being told to ignore the professor and not communicate with them about this?

And how might this create a certain level of distrust between students and professors while navigating a higher education institution?

Are there any AI based tools that we can recommend to writers while they are still in the early stages of brainstorming and drafting for idea generation, or should we stray away from recommending AI use for any stage of the writing process? I have found that AI can be helpful for when I am really stuck with coming up with ideas for an essay, but that is about all I have found it useful for when writing.

What if a tutor is not morally comfortable working with a student who we suspect is using AI or has admitted to using it for their assignment? Since we cannot share any suspicions we may have, how do we navigate potential moral dilemmas? At my previous tutoring position, we had the option to end sessions early or refuse service to students who we suspected of using AI. I am not saying I believe we should go this route, but what should we do if we do not want to seem as though we are overlooking AI usage?

I am concerned that writers who bring AI to the writing center will further repurpose my feedback/agenda items into prompts for ChatGPT (ex. if structure is an agenda item because they wrote the paper as a list instead of an essay, they could tell the AI software to write their paper in essay rather than list format). Is there a way to give feedback that will be practical for the writer to apply themselves but challenging to just feed back into AI software?

I would assume that if someone is using AI for a paper, they are less likely to go to the writing center in general. Have you found this to be true?
