Dayana Nazira Binti Abdul Razak (A168425) WEEK 1

Date : 2/08/2021
1st week date : 19/07/2021

Assalamualaikum & good morning everyone,

WHAT HAVE I DONE?
For the first week of EP, I have watched few tutorials on basic famous raya cookies which are sarang semut, semperit & almond London. I have also read a few articles on how to pick right type of flour for different types of biscuits as it can affect the texture and consistency of the biscuits.
For this first week, I have made Biskut Sarang Semut as it has been my curiosity on how to make it.

POINTS TO REMEMBER FROM WEEK 1
Basically, there are 9 types of flour that have different functions in biscuit making :
1. Tepung Serba Guna
2. Tepung Berprotein Tinggi
3. Tepung Berprotein Rendah
4. Tepung Gandum
5. Tepung Krimer
6. Tepung Naik Sendiri
7. Tepung Pulut
8. Tepung Kastad
9. Tepung Ubi
The important information I have gained this week is that to never overdo while mixing the ingredients when making biscuits. This is because by overdoing it can cause air to penetrate through the ingredients ( especially butter, sugar, condensed milk) causing the biscuits to be soft and not crispy. So, a soft consistency like a cake will be the result. Hence, in biscuits making, NEVER OVERDO!

MY FEELINGS & THOUGHTS
When starting this project, I felt so insecure because I have not been the one who knows a lot of stuff in the kitchen. But, baby steps is the key. After learning some basic recipes and informations on ingredients, I have come to learn that making business for biscuits can actually be very profitable. I feel more fulfilled now because at least I can do basic recipes without feeling unsure anymore!

DIFFICULTIES & CONCERNS? HOW DID I COPE?
However, my concern is actually I am still confused on when we should bake the cookies with heat upside down, or only from upside or from below only. It may be different recipes have different requirement of heat. Also, in the class the main concern by the students are usually the type of heat needed for specific biscuits and no one seems to have 100% certainty or formula about this yet. I will try to dig into this more.

2 WORDS TO DESCRIBE THIS EP SO FAR : BABY STEPS! :)

PLAN FOR NEXT WEEK
For week 2, I am planning to dig more into pastry making as I have learned substantial about cookies making this week.

1. Your name, matric number, date

Kausalyaa A/P Chandriah (A167959)

3rd august
Week 1 : 19th July - 25th July

2. What have you done?

For my elective posting, I chose baking. Baking has always been of interest to me and I seek to improve my skills in this area of interest. I decided to attend an online course on ude.my entitled “the art of baking” and as of week 1, I’ve completed the course and done my own extra research on recipes to bake. To apply this knowledge, I baked subway cookie dupes which turned out great. Not only did they look good, they tasted exceptionally close to the original subway chocolate chip cookies. However, I also got a little too excited with my successful first attempt and baked a coffee flavoured sponge cake which turned out not so great :( It became too dense as I overmixed my batter, leaving me with a rubbery base. Though I managed to salvage the cake with frosting, I understand that I still have a long way to go.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

I’ve come to a conclusion that baking is like science which heavily relies on trials and errors. To bake, I have to make sure my ingredients are weighed out precisely and that I’ve set the oven to the right temperature. Too much flour and the cookies are chewy, too much butter and the cookies would spread out causing it to lose it’s shape. I had to play around with the ingredients to suit my taste and preference. Timing is also very important because if I rush, the cookies wouldn’t have tuned out great.

Not only that, I learned the significance of mixing the ingredients accurately as there is literally no room for error. Undermixing will result in a crumbly cake and overmixing results in a rubbery, inedible cake.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

Overall, I feel quite acomplished and ready to move on and bake more complex recipes. Although the cake fail put a dent in my confidence, I still am excited to try out new recipes and eventually make a delicious final dessert.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Patience. I never realized that baking required so much patience. From the prep time to the finished product, I had to wait patiently as rushing will only tamper the final product.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

My own expectations proved out to be my biggest concern. I started putting too much pressure on myself to reach my unrealistically high expectations like make a tiered cake or make 3 different flavoured cookies within one week which frankly was unattainable because not only was I an amateur at baking, I also lacked most of the equipment needed. However, I stopped being so hard on myself and set small goals to achieve throughout the week in order to feel more accomplished. This not only helped me pull through mentally but also made me enjoy baking a lot more.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

On track.

8. Your plan for next week (Week 2)

For week 2, I’ve set to bake brownies as they’re harder than cookies but not as complicated as baking a cake. I will also be resorting to youtube for more guidance and baking tips. Not only that, I will also be researching ways to elevate a basic brownie.

Praveena Devarajan (A168456)
2nd Aug 2021

Hello everyone. I chose baking for my elective posting. During my first week, I started to enrol the baking class from Udemy.com. I have successfully completed 3 sessions so far from my online baking class called The Art of Baking With Yuppiechef. I learned about tips on how to bake cake and cookies in the last 2 sessions. It was really helpful for me really understand what baking is. I also baked chocolate chip cookies using the tips I learned from the sessions. And it out really good and delicious.

The points to remember from week 1 are that we must always read the recipe from start to finish, always prepare the baking trays according to the recipe, make sure to have all the ingredients and utensil plus lay out them nicely before starting, And for baking cookies, we must follow the 3 parts flour, 2 parts butter, and 1 part sugar rule.

I am so excited and motivated to bake more using the skills I learned from the online baking course.

I learned that we can take out the cookies a little earlier because it will still be baking when we lay them out on trays. It can prevent the cookies from hardening. It really helped me because i used to make cookies that become hard and i always wondered what I’m doing wrong. With this tips I actually baked better cookies. I also recorded the process of me baking the cooking and made some progress on my video.

So far i did not face any difficulties because I followed all the lessons I learned.

Two word to describe EP progress so far is exciting and enjoyable.

My plan for week 2 is to bake a cake and work on my video.

DATE: 3rd August 2021

WHAT HAVE I DONE?
Since I'm learning through open learning and there are few topics that need to be learn, for the 1st week I've learned two topics out of 9 topics. For topic 1, it was about the introduction of the sign language itself where they will give a video and I need to watch it and give my opinions. the video was about two person communicating using language without any subtitles. For my opinion i stated that i could not understand a single thing that they were trying to say. to be honest it really frustrates me. like, that's how ignorance i was for not trying to learn this sign language earlier. Other than that, there are rules and ways to communicate with mute and deaf people.

For topic 2, i learned about signing alphabets. From A-Z. Before that, we need to choose one hand only to sign, it is because we do not want to confuse mute and deaf people hence we can get better communication.

POINTS TO REMEMBER FOR WEEK 1
Ways to Communicate with Mute and Deaf People

tap on their shoulder to talk or to call them

if you do not know how to sign, use notebook to talk with them

other than that, we can also use our phone to communicate through texting

if we are using the help of sign language translator, please stand beside the mute and deaf people and look at them not the translator

do not cover your face when communicating with them

please communicate in bright place

Other points

remember how to sign from A-Z

remember how to sign your name and to understand when people sign their name

MY FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS
to be honest it really excites me. this thing is a really new thing to me, and learning it is fun because the class that i took used a simple and easy approach for newbies like me

1 GOOD THING THAT I CAN PRACTICE NOW
I can sign my own name smoothly!

DIFFICULTIES AND CONCERN
for now it is pretty simple to learn but at first it was not easy to remember all those alphabets

2 WORDS TO DESCRIBE EP POSTING PROGRESS SO FAR
its progressing

MY PLAN FOR NEXT WEEK
to continue with topic 3 and 4

LANGUAGE BEYOND WORDS

Date: 26/07/2021 – 01/08/2021

WHAT HAVE I DONE?

In week 1, I have started my journey of learning Malaysian Sign Language (MSL) also known as Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM) with BIM Asas 1 Course via Open Learning MOOC. Firstly, I was introduced to the facts and myths of MSL. Besides using sign language, I have also discovered a few ways to communicate with the deaf and hard of hearing community which is either by writing, text messaging or via translator.
I learned of how to sign the alphabets A to Z. Therefore, I am now able to finger-spell the names of people, location, objects and others. I also learned of how to sign the numbers 1 to 100. I find it very useful in expressing my age, date of birth and mobile number. Other than that, I have mastered the basic signs in exchanging greetings such as “hello”, “how are you?” and “good day”. By combining the things that I have learned throughout week 1, I am able to do a simple self-introduction which includes greetings, my name as well as age.
The learning process is fun and interactive as we are given several quizzes and task in which we are required to post videos and also to leave comments in other people’s videos. By watching other people’s videos, I can practice and gauge my understanding, learn from others and also correct my hand-shapes, facial expression and body language at the same time. I also revise with Buku Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia and conduct weekly review to better grasp the knowledge that I have learned.

POINTS TO REMEMBER FROM WEEK 1!
Besides having to remember how to sign the alphabets and numbers, I find it very important to keep in mind that when communicating with the deaf and hard of hearing, I have to ensure that the place is well-lit. I should not cover my face because eye contact and facial expressions are crucial components in sign language. Before initiating a conversation, I should tap a person’s shoulder to get their attention.

These points may seem to be easy but is easily forgotten if we do not put an effort to remember them because we only require our sense of hearing when conversing whereas the deaf and hard of hearing require sense of sight. Therefore, eye contact, facial expression, body language as well as good lighting in the place of conversation are important factors which contributes to a clear and smooth conversation.

MY FEELINGS & THOUGHTS

I am happy as I can understand finger-spelling although I am still quite slow and I sometimes get confused and frustrated when I forget how to sign certain letters when spelling words. However, the fact that I am slowly able to understand sign language even though bit by bit brings me a feeling of satisfaction. :)

1 GOOD THING FROM WHAT I DID THAT I CAN PRACTICE NOW!
I can sign my name, age and date of birth.

DIFFICULTIES/ CONCERNS & HOW DID I COPE

Sometimes I get confused with the signs for the alphabets and it can be very frustrating when I forget how to sign letters midway when spelling a word. To cope with this problem, I am practising finger-spelling and I quiz myself to finger-spell random objects at home.

2 WORDS TO DESCRIBE ELECTIVE POSTING PROGRESS SO FAR

Fun and interesting :)

MY PLANS FOR NEXT WEEK (WEEK 2)

My plans for week 2 is to learn how to sign topics related to family, location which includes states and capitals, colours as well as feelings.

What have you done?

First of all, I decided to learn sign language. As we are currently in MCO, I could not go to a physical class so I attend online class. The platform that I have been using is open learning. So for the first week. I have learned 2 topics out of 9. The first topic, it was an introduction of what sign language is all about. Most important thing is that sign language is not universal. For example, in Malaysia we use Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia while the other country use their own. Like British sign language and so forth. Probably, there might be some different sign use by them for each words. Perhaps I could grab a chance to learn other sign language later. Who knows. For topic 1, I watched a video where two persons were communicating with sign language. We were asked to comment on what we understood based on the video. I could only understand a simple gesture based on their facial expressions. The video triggered me to learn more and more.

For topic 2, I learned about signing alphabet. On a serious note, I need to do some hand warm up beforehand. It was really exciting. I learned alphabet A-Z. I need to practice to only use one hand to do the sign.

Points to remember from week 1!

How to communicate with Mute and Deaf person

tap their shoulder to communicate with them

If you cannot understand sign language, write on the notebook or use messaging apps instead

Do not cover your face while communicating with them because facial expression matters in the conversation

Communicate in a bright place so the sign can be seen clearly

Your feelings & thoughts

It excited me whenever I am able to move on to the next topic

It is very user friendly and you can learn at your own time

It is the best choice that I have made for this elective posting.

1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Sign my own name very well

Any difficulties/concerns?

UVARRAJESWARI SELVARAJOO (A168263) 3rd AUGUST 2021

Hello everyone! Hope everyone doing well on the other side.

WHAT HAVE I DONE?

I chose baking as my elective posting. There are various reasons for it. First and foremost, I am person who hates to cook and enter the kitchen. Besides, I never had interest in cooking, baking is far from my reach. But, I want to challenge myself by taking this course for my EP because after all these days, cooking is essential and baking is a reward. So WHY NOT! Therefore, I attended an online baking course on UDE.MY titled "The art of baking with Yuppiechef" where I learned a lots of baking skills and the crisp art of bakery. The tip that provide by them are really useful and resourceful. Thus, I decided to bake Congo Bars which a cake which came out quite well.

POINTS TO REMEMBER FROM WEEK 1

Before start to bake, make sure to go through the recipe ingredients and steps from beginning to the end. Measure each of the ingredients precisely, not more and not less. I noticed when the measurement is not correct, the cake will become one kind that I cannot describe of. These Congo Bars are my second trial that succeed after terrible first start. Therefore, measurement is always important thing. Suitable temperature and right size of the tray also important for baking a great cake.

MY FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS

Baking is not really my thing but I really want to learn and master it because I will gain a lot of things as newcomer. I will try my best to lose my cool or patience when something goes wrong during baking process. Learning is a part of life process and so do baking. Thus, I will to enjoy and have fun while baking cakes and cookies.

1 GOOD THING FROM WHAT I DID THAT I CAN PRACTICE NOW!

PATIENCE. What have I done?
well, for my EP i have decided to learn sign language! due to current MCO and rising covid cases, i learned it through online platform (open learning & youtube). all in all the course has 9 topics and for my friet week, i have managed to learn 3 topics as they are quite easy to learn for me (or maybe i just enjoyed learning it too much.

2. Points to remember from week 1
I need to constantly practice sign language with my family members and I can’t feel discouraged when they don’t understand what I’m talking about. hence, I have decided to talk verbally while doing the sign language so they can learn from me too (hopefully!). also, I need to work on my facial expressions.

3. My Feelings & thoughts
I was feeling scared at first because I couldn’t catch what were the teachers trying to tell me through sign language. But, their expressions and gestures helped me a lot. But, I should not feel discourage. This is the process of learning.

Date: 6/8/2021
2) What have I done
For my elective posting, I choose to learn Malaysian Sign Language (BIM) as previously, I have always missed the opportunity to join the BIM workshop conducted by AMSA. Besides, I think that this is a good chance to learn since I have a month’s time which is sufficient for me to master basic BIM.

The platform I use to learn BIM is Openlearning and BIM book by MFD. During week 1, I learn 4 topics, which are introduction to BIM, alphabet, numbers and greetings. In introduction to BIM, I study the facts and myths of BIM, for example, BIM is not a universal language and it is not translated from Bahasa Malaysia. I also learn about the correct ways to communicate with the deaf community. Next, I learn how to sign the alphabet from A to Z where now I manage to sign various things like names, objects and places. Furthermore, I learn the way to sign numbers, which is useful in many ways like conveying my age and perform a simple calculation. Moreover, I acquire the skills to greet using sign language. At the end of week 1, I do some revision by playing the KotBam and Eddy app which is interesting and fun. I also complete a weekly review with my friend through zoom.

3) Points to remember from week 1!
First and foremost, I need to practice sign language consistently to build muscle memory as it is something very new to me. Next, I realize the importance of integrating facial expression and body movement in sign language because it aids in conveying the message of a certain word. Also, I need to ensure my hands are not moving around when signing so the other person can see clearly what I am signing.

4) My feelings and thoughts
At first, I am quite worried because sign language is totally new to me and I take quite a long time to learn a new skill. However, after 1 week of learning, I am slowly getting hang of it. Even though it can sometimes be quite confusing, I enjoy the process of mastering it.

5) 1 good thing from what I did that I can practice now!
Be consistent and patient during the learning process and keep practising! Now I am able to sign a simple self-introduction.

6) Any difficulties/ concerns? How did you cope?
The difficulty I face is that I am not able to keep up with the rapid hand movement of the instructor. Therefore, I need to keep replaying and pausing the video to learn a certain sign.

7) 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Exciting and satisfactory

6) My plan for next week (Week 2)
My plan for week 2 is to learn how to sign colours, family, time, date, animals, food and beverages.

1 What have I done?.

Elective posting has given me the opportunity to learn Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia from this openlearning.com platform. It cost me RM100 but it is still affordable and it is not disappointing. I chose to do this elective posting on my own because I want to do it on my own leasure time, without holding back others who tries to finish their elective posting as soon as possible. So for the first phase I have successfully finish 5 topics, which are quite easy and interesting. There were quizzes and video assignment to be done which help a lot to understand things. Too good for introduction I guess.

2. Points to remember from week 1
well to practice on the topic taught on my other free time as they are a lot to remember so without training I would forget it easily.

3. My Feelings & thoughts
iAt first I thought it was hard, but as time goes and as I started to learn, things became easier. However I am still at the basic part so I guess it is too early to judge. To be honest it is quite enjoyable even though I am not a fan of video assignment.

4. One good thing from what you did that you can practice now
I started sharing the knowledge I acquire to my family members snd friends on social media. How did you cope?
I am grateful to God for giving me good health, much leisure time, considerable internet speed and family members who mind their own business. With that I can do this task without interference. The only concern I have is I am insecure to record my own video and posted it at openlearning. However, it was the task so I had to overcome my insecurity and alhamdullillah so far so good. I just could not stand to see myself in the video.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Surprisingly fun

7.

1.name, matric number and date

Azza nur azreeen bin ahmad ryzal

A167894

6 August 2021

2. What have you done?

For this week I have learned HSK level 1. Basically HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) or also known as the Chinese Proficiency Test is an international standardized exam which assesses non-native Chinese speakers' Chinese language proficiency. It contains the most common Mandarin Chinese words and sentences.

The things that I learned were the tones, pinyin and simple sentences such as to introduce myself, to ask for directions and questions that usually people asked when buying things.

It teaches me to read and write some simple Chinese characters too but for this course they didn’t really emphasize on Chinese characters.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

Always practice the pronunciation even though its hard and always familiarise the words. Luckily this course provides me with flashcards to help me know my words more. I can always go through those words back whenever I want. So hopefully it will help me remember the basic words that usually we used on daily basis sentences.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

My thoughts so far were quite good. I am starting to get the hang of it saying those tongue-twisting words which might be difficult for me at first. Looking forward to study more on Mandarin

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Importance to pronounce the tones properly.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

The difficulties that I am having was this course was an international course that wanted to help foreigner to speak when they travel to China. So, the introduction part was focused on the basic phrases which can be helpful for traveling to China.

There were also many unfamiliarised words that made the learning to be more difficult. Should have watched some Chinese movies or drama who knows it would help.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Hard but fun

8. Your plan for next week (Week 2)

I was planning to just scheme thru this week content just to revise back so I wouldn’t forget what I have just learned and considering redoing the HSK1 test and hoping to get a better score.

For next week, I will move on to HSK level 2. With this I hope that I would have an excellent grasp of basic Mandarin Chinese and can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.

There will be 23 lessons on HSK level 2 which will teach longer phrases and sentences but for this part it would focus more on the useful Chinese grammatical rules.

1. Your name, matric number, date

DURKAYINY SANKAR

A167906

Week 2: 26th July - 1st august

2. How is your progress?

As of week 2 , i made chocolate chip cookies. I’ve searched far and wide for the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe. Finally, I found one on sally’s baking addiction website. I’ve never made cookies before and this was my first attempt. The cookies came out pretty good . I’m not really much of a cookie eater but these may have just changed my mind. They taste even better the next day and My family loves them. After this , i think this will be my go to chocolate chip cookie recipe.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Always preheat the oven before starting the process because it makes life so much easier. Use cornstarch in dry ingredients, trust me on this ; cornstarch;a thickening ingredient is the secret weapon in this cookie recipe. 2 teaspoons give the cookies extra lift and leave them extra soft.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

To be honest , i feel happy and quite motivated as the outcome of my baking was incredible. I find myself enjoying this whole process. Baking was really therapeutic for me. Following a recipe with clear cut directions and proven results gives you a sense of power and allows you to feel like you are the captain of a ship sailing on smooth waters. You can craft something beautiful, delicious, comforting and perfect. I am thrilled to try my next recipe on week 3.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Patience Patience Patience

Im telling this because i spent around 4 hours on baking this chocolate chip cookies . If you rush through the process the outcome might not be satisfying. So , i need to stay calm and composed whilst baking.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

I find it difficult to adjust the oven temperature and the baking time. This is because the first batch of my cookies was a bit burnt . When I put the next batch , i reduced the temperature from 175 to 160 and i also reduced the time from 10 minutes to 7 minutes. And it came out perfectly so I adhered to the same temperature and cooking time for the following batches.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Therapeutic

Enjoyable

8.

Date:2/8/2021-8/8/2021(Week 1)
