Around 30,000 Ugandan Asians emigrated to the UK.  Amin expropriated businesses and properties belonging to the Asians and the Europeans and handed them over to his supporters. The businesses were mismanaged, and industries collapsed from lack of maintenance. The most notable event was the arrival of close to 500 workers from the Caribbean on the SS Empire Windrush, in 1948 .It was the efforts to bridge the cultural gap between the communities that gave life to the Notting Hill carnival.
