answer to one of the following questions:

What can studying the past of our planet's ecology tell us about the future?

What effect can changes to the surface of the Earth (everything, earthquakes to continental drift) have on human history?

Changes in the geography of Earth due to continental drift could result in some habitable areas of the world to become less habitable and less habitable areas to become more habitable. It could change what that area exports and imports due to changes of climate and the landscape. For example if a tropical area moves closer to the south pole the demand for air conditioners would lower. If Pangaea had never separated then cultures would be located in very different places. For example Africans could have migrated to North America and spread their culture there.

For example about 280 million years ago the all the Earth's continents were merged together to form a super continent known as Pangea. If the Earth would have stayed like that we would be able to walk from New York to Africa like walking across the street. All of the worlds people, cultures, races, and religions of the world would combine.

What can studying the past of our planet?
In studying the past of our planet we can figure out what works and what does not. In researching other past civilizations can help us understand how to take care of the planet in the future. Lets say Pangea never broke up. Animals would not have evolved into all the different species we have now. Humans would have grouped together in different, isolated tribes. Agriculture would not have taken such a huge impact upon our life as we would still live as hunter/ gatherers. We would battle each other and yet we would also have peace. "Civilization" as we know it to be now would have taken much longer to evolve. Our population would not have increased as it has now, we would live in "harmony" with nature. We wouldn't take more than what we needed and we would survive off what we created with our bare hands.

From looking back we can tell what will happen in the future. We can study past civilizations for information. If one civilization fall in a certain way and we studied that then hopefully we wont make the same mistake. Also if we find that some things worked will we repeat those things. All in all the past gives us a lot of information for the future.
