I'm thirty five years old; i been married eleven years and I got a boy who sleeps in the living room and all I got to give him is stories about how rich white people live"

This quote proves that Walter knows that there are more wealthy people, and he's talking about it in a way where he presents that idea as a contrast between living poorly and what he and his family could have but they don't. It emphasizes the fact that they lack money and it causes a problem for him and his family while "white rich people" live in luxury, and he speaks about it like it's a fairytale or something that he can't have.

So tired, moaning and groaning all the time, but you wouldn't do nothing to help, would you? You couldn't be on my side that long for nothing, could you?"

This quote shows that Walter was maybe a little upset with Ruth, but since they already don't have much to work with and as the man of the house, he is tired too but he can't complain and he tries to work with what they have and power through it unlike Ruth who shows her discomfort through her attitude. This also shows that as a poor family, they can't do much but try their best to do what they can, but of course that would come with the struggle of being worn down- portrayed through Ruth, which is also showing that their life is already hard.

We had even picked out the house."

Mama talks about her dream life with her husband as a "rat trap" because she had a picture in her head with her husband that they were only going to live in their place for a little bit, but ended up living there for years which shows that some people face unfair challenges that stop them from their dreams.

This shows that even though everyone can have the same dreams and still have the same process to become that, others may face different obstacles to actually be able to get to that level. "Yes, life can be a barrel of disappointment sometimes." (Ruth).

These quotes show that the dreams that Mama had werent able to be achieved because of their money problem.
