The literary vampire first appeared in 18th century poetry with the publication of Polodori´s The Vampyre (1819) which was inspired by Lord Byron. Later influential works include Varney the Vampire (1847) and Carmilla (1872) but the one that we read, Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897), really shed a light on the genre.

Count Dracula was originally inspired by Vlad Bassarab, born in 1431 in the small town of Sighisoara. His father was also named Vlad who was notorious for his cruelty. Even his own soldiers were afraid of him, partly because he was a knight of the order "Dragon", and partly because he was so cruel which led to him getting the nickname "Dracul", meaning "devil" or "dragon". His son Vlad was therefore called Dracul-a; "The devil's son".
