The supermarket chains are dominating the pricing war between the farmers and themselves. They kept pushing prices of fruits down to improve their own positions and those of consumers. Rayner's made a conscious decision to position themselves as a fruit picking farm and selling their products on the farm in their cafe such as preserved fruits and jams

Apparently, the same thing is happening to dairy farmers

I think the main aim of the orchard was really to educate urban ppl like us and give us the experience of plucking fruits off the trees to eat.
Australians have a this pride in their produce/products, they do not simply serve something, they will only serve the best. So the fruits are usually for visitors who visit the farms only because they can't be exported due to its lack of preservative.

It was a very delightful trip. It was also my first fruit-picking experiences. I had the chance to learn different varieties of peaches and many other interesting fruits that are not grown in Singapore. The host Cam is very proud of their products. He introduced and served us the fruits with passion and insisted us to taste it freshly from the pick as they are all grown organically without pesticide. This kind of confidence and sense of security in the quality of food that we are eating is important, however, is not guaranteed in many other countries.
