Why do we feel the need to belong?

We feel the need belong because it makes us feel good about ourselves. We feel included and important. When people don't belong, they feel hurt. In One of Us Is Lying, Addy was a very popular girl who tried so hard to belong. She would do anything her boyfriend, Jake, asked because she didn't want him to breakup with her. If Jake broke up with Addy, she would lose all of her friends. Addy would "never turn Jake down" because in Addy's eyes, "if you say no too much, pretty soon someone will say yes" (McManus 45). Jake made her feel wanted and welcome, so she did anything he asked. For example, Addy said that, "Jake's never liked me in shapeless clothes", so Addy changed into clothes Jake would like more (McManus 63). This shows that Addy wants to belong so bad and she would do anything to belong.
