When his dad got back from the consentration camp he had PTSD. Which almost killed him. It changed there life style forever.

Joesphś dad got taken away to Dachau. They had to leave German so they went on a boat to Cuba. The boat was like a cruise ship, everyone was nice to them even though they were jews. His dad had PTSD it was hard time on their family. They finally got to Cuba but the people won´t let them in, not yet at least.

The first evidence to support this is the fact that all the children are leaving the homes they have known for places they know little about, and have never been. The children are exposed to conditions that most parents protect their children from seeing, and these children are in the middle of all this.

I think the lesson Alan Gratz is trying to reach with Refugee is that refugees have to go through long, dangerous, sad, and lonely journeys just to get somewhere that is safe for their family and themselves. One piece of evidence that supports my idea is when Mahmoud and his family were floating in the mediterranean sea after their boat sunk. Another piece of evidence that supports my thought is when Isabel and her family were trying to get to Miami, Florida they almost sunk multiple times, they almost ran out of water, they lost their medicine, and they almost ran out of food. All of this proves that refugees have to go through dangerous, long, sad, and lonely journeys just trying to be somewhere safe for their family and themselves.

Also Josef's family were forced out of there home by the German Nazi's. Finally Mahmoud was forced from his house because a missile hit there apartment were they lived.

I feel that the there is a very great meaning and has a true message in the book Refugee. I feel that the theme is bad things happen to people every day. Just like in the story Josef the Nazis broke into there house, stole there father and took him to a awful place, forced them to leave the country, and finally brought there father back in terrible condition. This explains why the theme is bad things happen to good people.

I think the lesson Alan Gratz is trying to show that life can be hard sometimes just in different ways to different people. He shows it very well in the book Refugee. For example, in Isabel's story it was a big decision for her family to make. Her mom knew that she wanted to have her baby in Cuba.
