What does it mean to tell the truth slant? Is the truth told slant the same as a lie? Explain.
By telling the truth slant Dickinson means that although the truth should be told it is best to not tell the complete truth or include every detail because it could lead to problems in the future. An example shown in the poem is in the line "As Lightning to the Children eased/With explanation kind." If a parent attempts to explain to their young child that is afraid of the lightning what is occurring in the sky during a storm then the child will not understand the scientific terms that they use. By using a story to help explain it, the child will have an idea as to what lightning really is with a way that their minds will understand. A truth told slant is not an exact lie; telling a slant truth is still the truth but it is holding back part of it.

In what way does the message of "Tell all the Truth but tell it slant" reflect the way Dickinson's poetry works?

The message of "Tell all the Truth but tell it slant", shows us what Dickinson believes and practices. It reflects Dickinson's poetry by telling us how she twists words to get a point across or persuade someone. This shows that her poetry has been altered to make you think that everything is alright and is within the bound of your judgement. An example of this is "The Truth must dazzle gradually/Or every man be blind". This tells us that to much truth can lead to destruction instead of good. The idea "Tell all the Truth but tell it slant", helps us tell all the truth but adding a bit of a twist so it doesn't cause problems. When going back to Dickinson's poetry, this is evidence for phrasing her writing a little different than if she was expressing her full opinions.

The main theme of the poem is the truth and its consequences. Through the poem Dickinson is sending a message to be careful with the truth. The truth has to either be told slightly untrue so that it sounds less harmful to the person it is being told to. If the truth is told in all its facts it may offend people and lead to later consequences including death as Dickinson mentions "The Truth must dazzle gradually/Or every man be blind."

Rhyme and rhythm have an important role in a poem's message. Rhyme can affect the tone of the poem, making it dry and bland or smooth and energetic. In this poem, the only rhyme used is between "kind" and "blind". If the poem does not have much rhyme, then the poem is trying to be very modest and is usually trying to get a point across. If there are only a few rhymes, then those words or phrases are an important part of the poem. Rhythm effects how the reader remembers the poem and can be a crucial part in putting emphasis on a line or phrase. This poem doesn't have much rhythm as the poet is focusing on sending a message they want you to analyze and reflect on.
