Include an image that would be a symbol to represent Jonas at this point of the story. Explain how this image you chose symbolizes Jonas.
At the end if the novel Jonas was almost fully aware of how the community isn't perfect. He tries to find a glimpse of goodness but instead he learns about release and just how cruel the community is. Jonas plans to escape from the community and brings Gabriel with him. Jonas feels like he's getting emptier when he gives away his memories. A long time has passed and he finds the hill from one of his memories. He slides on the sled and feels extremely happy like in the memory of love. At the very end Jonas feels as if it was just an echo of the memory and not actually happening in real life.

I chose a picture of a person walking twords the light at the end of the tunnel because Jonas is finally free from the cruel community and can feel happiness and love.

Jonas should get the memory of electronics like televisions, videogames, and videogame consoles/systems.

As The Giver put his somewhat cold hands on Jonas's back, a new memory came into Jonas's mind. It wasn't a particularly good memory but it wasn't sad either. Jonas looked around the dwelling to see if anything was happening but so far there was nothing new. Suddenly a white door opened in the hallway. The room Jonas was looking in was too far way to hear it but there were sounds of voices, music and other strange noises coming from the room with the white door. Jonas wondered if the room with the white door was the correct place to experience the new memory. He walked at a slow pace to reach the door for he didn't know whether the memory was a nice one or a painful one. Jonas could hear the sounds now, but he couldn't make out anything in specific. As Jonas walked into the room he quickly noticed a little boy, probably a nine or ten, sitting in front of a large screen. In Jonas's mind he got the words "television" and "T.V." Jonas decided that calling it "T.V." would be much more simple to say. Jonas decided to sit next to the boy and look at what was happening on the T.V. Jonas could see two characters, on the screen of the T.V., attacking each other and knocking each other off a ledge into the void of nothingness. Jonas got reminded of war and the time he fell down a very steep hill. Jonas felt a chill down his spine and into his leg. He looked at the little boy who seemed to enjoy the game and felt confused.
"How could he not see how horrible this is?" Jonas thought. He tried to understand how the kid could possibly enjoy something like that. "Video game" came into Jonas's mind.
"Video-game?" Jonas thought. How does a video game work? Are all video games that cruel? Why is it called "videogame" in the first place? Jonas found himself asking more questions than there were answers. He looked back at the screen, now knowing that it was called a videogame, and just watched as the little boy controlled the character to knock off his opponent. Jonas found himself rooting for the kid to win even if it meant the kid would be hurting a character who isn't real. When the little boy won, he turned off the thing the videogame came from, flopped on the bed, and fell asleep. Jonas closed his eyes and once again found himself underneath The Giver's hands.
"Giver," Jonas said, more confused than ever.
"Yes?" The Giver replied
"Why did you give me that memory?"
The Giver chuckled to himself for a second.
"Why not?"

Jonas had forgotten that there didn't have to be a specific reason for giving a memory, like when he gave the memory of sailing on a boat to Gabriel. Jonas didn't give the memory to Gabriel for any deep meaning, he simply wanted to make Gabriel happy and fall back asleep.

"It's about time for you to go back to your dwelling, Jonas" said The Giver.
"Goodbye, Giver, see you next time!" Jonas exclaimed as he walked to the doorway and left home.

Why I chose that memories
I (mainly) chose the memory of videogames because nowadays every kid under fifteen has probably played a game with "violence" in it. Many adults, especially parents, complain that videogames are one of the reasons why there is a lot of violence in the world and to that I say I disagree. Videogames may cause children to be violent but it's certainly not one main reasons there is violence. Let's say a girl plays Super Smash Bros., a game where you try to knock all the characters off the stage until they run out of lives, then one day that girl tries to knock a boy off the swing so she can swing on it. Does the game excuse why she tried to push him off the swing? The right answer is no, but the game might have made her think that knocking people off of things is perfectly fine.

Directions--As we read the novel, be sure to answer the questions. You can just get to the point with your answer for this box.
Due by Wed., May 1=question 1
1. Use chp 3, pg 29, read 1st full paragraph and answer--What does this detail suggest about the role of the announcements in Jonas’s community? Be specific and support your answer.
YOUR ANSWER-- The Speaker makes announcements to inform the people of the Community of wrongdoings, events, and dangers.
(author's vp is to publicly shame people so they obey the rules)
2. Jonas’s community is highly regulated with rules. Read the sections about the rule against bragging (34). Answer and support-- What is the rule’s purpose in the community? Why does it exist? What impact does the rule have on the community?
YOUR ANSWER-- The rule against bragging was made to keep people from feeling envious of the person who's bragging. If no one can talk about how good they are at their job then no one can be inspired to do better than another. If no one is inspired then no one can hurt others if they don't suceed.
3. Which narrative point of view (POV) is used in The Giver? Use pg 67 to support your answer with text evidence with the sentence from the novel that proves the POV you chose.
YOUR ANSWER--3rd person limited because on page 66 and 67 the narrator says "Jonas was glad that that assignment was taken."
QUESTION #4--DUE WEDNESDAY, MAY 8.
Use p. 82: How does Jonas feel upon leaving the auditorium? Which words make you think that? (support your answer)
YOUR ANSWER-- When Jonas left the auditorium he felt distanced from all the rest of the community. I know because on page 82 the narrator says "upon leaving the auditorium, he felt the apartness."
QUESTION #5
How has Jonas’s attitude shifted slightly in chapter twelve? Use chapter 12. HINT-Keep this in mind as you think about a new symbol to symbolize Jonas in the Middle of the Novel.

YOUR ANSWER-- Jonas's attitude shifted to feeling lonely and different from his friends.

I consider Jonas finding out what release is, as the climax of The Giver because that was the moment he realized just how horrible life is without feelings. For a quote, I think
"The trembling fear
Is more than I can take

When I'm up against

The echo in the mirror," from the song ECHO by Crusher-P, matches the feelings in this climax. I chose that quote because the "echo in the mirror" is supposed to be Jonas, before he knew what release was, scared of what he could have done if he hadn't been selected as receiver of memory. The quote shows that Jonas doesn't want to feel hatred for his father, who he loves dearly, even though he just killed a baby. Another thing is is that Jonas could have gotten a job where he had to release people and he is greatful yet sad that he knows just how horrible release is.

The resolution of The Giver was when Jonas escaped the community, releasing the memories. That's because the problem was that the community had nothing good like love and happiness so when Jonas gave away the memories everyone would start to know what feelings are. A song that fits this resolution is "hello world" by Louie Zong. The robot singing is Jonas thinking about how he feels. Feelings like sadness and confusion when he knew wasn't born to live a happy life; only to work, raise kids, then get released. When he let go of the memories not only him but everyone would now feel love and happiness.
