Readers, Writers, Texts
1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?

We study literature to gain a better understanding of the world in general. Studying literature leads to an overall greater understanding. We study The Things They Carry because Tim O'Brien uses a plethora of literary devices and is able to convey multiple messages throughout his book. This book allows students to learn about different literary techniques and how they can use them in the future.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
We can be affected by literary texts in multiple ways because people find comfort in stories they can relate to whether the situations are real or not. People love to read because it's entertaining and they find a piece of themselves in the texts. We are impacted by The Things They Carried because Tim O'Brien was able to correctly convey his messages about war and how it affects people. His stories are for veterans, students, teachers, men, women, anyone, because the messages can be interpreted in a variety of ways. When it comes to Tim O'Brien and The Things They Carried, there are endless opportunities for the audience to relate to the characters or the book as a whole.

3. How does the structure and style of TTTC affect its meaning?
The structure and style of TTTC affect it's meaning because the choices made by the author, make the story real. His vignette, "How To Tell A True War Story" the author explains how nothing in a war story is ever completely true. The audience can expand off of that and relate to the message O'Brien is conveying when he wrote, "The truths are contradictory. It can be argued, for instance, that war is grotesque. But in truth war is also beauty. For all it's horror, you can't help but gape at the awful majesty of combat"(O'Brien 77). This contradiction of something being so inhumane that it's beautiful, can have the audience reflect on themselves. They will start to think about every terrible thing they've experienced. They will begin to notice that among all the terrible things, lies beauty, and that is the truth of it all.

Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works. Beloved connects to other works we've read including poems by Langston Hughes since they are both describing and growing from trauma endured during the time of slavery. The global issues found in this book can also be similar to the ones in the poems. It could be connected to The Things They Carried, but since slavery is a very crucial part of these stories it can really only be connected through global issues of trauma.

How does Beloved connect to our world today? Beloved connects to our world today since its global issues are still able to connect to many other situations.

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)?

The novel specifically addresses issues of gender, writing and power in certain chapters. Some include where Morrison is discussing Paul D's manhood, and other chapters where the author is talking about motherhood. Power can be found throughout the novel including chapters where the characters are sharing their experiences of the loss of power while they were enslaved. The structure and style of the novel can give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" by making their experiences very crucial to the story as a whole. By telling the stories of the women of 124, Morrison is the one giving them power that was taken from them.

How does Chronicle connect to other works we've read? Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.
This book can be connected back to other works we've read because it unfolds the ideas of trauma, honor, guilt, culture, grief, etc. These ideas can be seen throughout the majority of the novels we have read this year. The use of certain techniques including anaphoras, symbolism, and irony are seen in TTTC, Poems of Langston Hughes, and Beloved. It seems that the authors all have a similar message, but the stories are interpreted through a separate culture or point of view.
How does Chronicle connect to our world today?
The messages in CoaDF can be connected to our world today since the culture primarily remains the same. Similar to other works we've read, these issues are still prominent. From what I can tell, this culture continues to strongly uphold their beliefs. These societal/cultural expectations are still forced upon people from this culture, so a cycle is created and unbroken. Therefore, this story continues on through generations far longer than the book itself.

Intertextuality
How valid is the notion of a "classic" literary text? What makes Persepolis "literary" even though it is a graphic novel?
Persepolis is "literary" despite it being a graphic novel because of the context and execution of how Satrapi delivers her messages to the audience. Although majority of the graphic novel are illustrations, these illustrations are dramatically weighted. Through the weight of these images, Satrapi is able to say what she needs to say without the need for paragraphs, all she uses are simple captions and speech bubbles.
Time and Space
What insight did Persepolis give you into Iranian life during and after the revolution?
By reading Persepolis, I was able to put myself into Marjane Satrapi's shoes. Although I have never encountered situations that she has experienced, the way she goes about communicating with the audience leaves me feeling like I was there with her. I was severely educated on a topic I didn't know anything about. I knew of the Iranian Revolution because of history classes, but by reading this graphic novel I was able to sympathize with the people of Iran. I became angry when there was something terrible that happened. I related to Marjane as she tried to navigate life in a new land, because I grew up moving around a lot. I believe that any previous views I had on the Iranian Revolution and the people of Iran has changed thanks to learning from Satrapi.

Duffy explores many motifs of feminism, womanhood, love, family, and memory. I find these topics particularly interesting because I am able to relate to most of her themes. I often dwell on my childhood memories because they are easier to think of than my unknown future. Overall, I believe that Duffy easily depicts the concept of women's struggles and emotions in ways that aren't traditionally seen in poetry.

How can the author use perspective to carefully capture fond memories of womanhood, and how they compare to those of childhood?

-I find Dillard's motifs of reading, societal expectations, and games the most interesting. I enjoyed how she addressed societal expectations of women, and how they are confined to almost performing a certain way for the male gaze. However, I also enjoyed how she described reading as her escape from the world, and an outlet for her to get to know her father more. The motif of games or playing was also interesting since I had shared many similar experiences with her.

-How does Dillard emphasize societal expectations of women through the perspective of a young girl?

"On the battlefield, in the torture chamber, on a sinking ship, the issues that you are fighting for are always forgotten, because the body swells up until it fills the universe, and even when you are not paralyzed by fright or screaming with pain, life is a moment-to-moment struggle against hunger or cold or sleeplessness, against a sour stomach or aching tooth"(Orwell 103).

This quote really stood out to me through a theme of survival. In desperate moments, someone is constantly looking for something to look forward to. But despite any efforts, they aren't able to get their body to move.

"A curious emotion stirred in Winston's heart. In front of him was an enemy who was trying to kill him; in front of him, also, was a human creature, in pain"(Orwell 105-106).

I really enjoyed this quote because I believe it shows a part of Winston that can be easily missed. He never is really in touch with his emotions besides being with Julia, and their moments are always sweet together. I also like how he came to the realization that although she was his enemy, she was also just a human trying to survive too.

"If you loved someone, you loved him, and when you had nothing else to give, you still gave him love"(Orwell 164)

This quote was memorable to me because it shows that the little things are what matters most. Even with nothing to give, you could always give love. I interpreted it as taking the love from within yourself and giving it to others, is what replenishes the love within you. In other words, you know you are loved because you exist, and that is enough.

What motifs/themes does Shakespeare explore that you find interesting? Think of what you could connect to other texts.

- I find the motifs of sun, makeup, and acting very interesting. I thought it was really cool to see how the sun can be interpreted differently as a motif compared to other works we have read. I also really was interested in how makeup was used as a way to hide being two-faced. Similarly to makeup, acting was also used as a way of deception. I never really dived into these motifs before they were brought to my attention.

What are some interesting quotes/scenes from Hamlet that you could reflect on for Paper 2? These should connect to the motifs/themes mentioned in your first question.

- Some interesting scenes from Hamlet that could be used in Paper 2 include Ophelia's death scene, Ophelia's flower scene, Play scene, and the grave digging scene. I find that many of Ophelia's scenes can be used for deception of her madness as well as subtle confrontation. I also really liked the play scene where Hamlet used acting to get the truth out of King Claudius. Finally, the grave digging scene could have an interesting connection to makeup as well as acting, since Hamlet discovers the skull of King Hamlet's jester.

What did you appreciate or enjoy in this unit?

-I really enjoyed the creative aspect of Murakami's short stories. I loved the idea that there is no need to have any explanation, or that the unexplained is already explained. It is valid to not have a strict idea or meaning behind the stories. As well as the fact that some people may find meanings that others won't, or that the meanings seem to find them. I wasn't really familiar with ambiguity before, but it is now one of my favorite literary tactics.

Do you see yourself writing about Murakami's short stories for Paper 2? Why or why not?

-I do see myself writing about Murakami's short stories for Paper 2 because there are so many meanings I could find, I feel like I could connect them to anything. It is very easy to generalize when ambiguity is used, since everything is up for interpretation. I believe I could have a very strong Paper 2 when I use Murakami's stories for reference. I am not sure which stories I will use but I think "Barn Burning", "The Elephant Vanishes", and "TV People" would be a good start.

Which works that have not already been used on your IO or HL Essay, so far, seems best to connect to Murakami's short stories?

-I think that "The Stranger" could be helpful with Murakami's stories due to a surrealism style. However, I also believe that "1984" would work with "TV People" because I could find common themes of manipulated media or surveillance. These restrictions/implications can cause an impact on the identity of individuals involved.

Sleep

"I don't need it anymore. My flesh may have to be consumed, but my mind belongs to me. I'm keeping it for myself. I will not hand it over to anyone"(Murakami 99).

I believe this quote is very strong because it shows how the narrator has let her physical being been consumed by her lack of sleep, but will not let it get to her mentally. I feel as if there are good themes of identity, characterization, and individualism.

The Elephant Vanishes

"I realize now that the reality of things is not something you convey to people but something you make"(Murakami)

This supports surrealism and ambiguity found in all of Murakami's works, I think these would be very interesting to connect to Hamlet or 1984. These would be themes of identity.

TV People

"I look at the telephone; I think bout the telephone cord. Endless lengths of phone cable linking one telephone to another. Maybe, somewhere, at some terminal of that awesome mega circuit, is my wife. Far, far away, out of my reach. I can feel her pulse"(Murakami 216).

One of my favorite Murakami quotes, because it accentuates the process of the relationship between the narrator and his wife deteriorating.
