Peirce has distinguished sings into three different types: icons, symbols and indexes. An index is a sign that shows a relation to an object by deducing some form of reasoning. In the clip, Ferris Beuller pretended that he was sick by showing the symptoms of a cold. For example, his cold hands and blurry vision worked as an indexical sign and made his parents believe. Also, how him faking those symptoms symbolizes his dislike for school, as he did not want to attend to take the exam. This is indicative of a possible silent form of communication that relies on signals, and so is reflective of Saussure’s ideology of a signifier and a signified intent being necessary for proper communication. Also, this could relate to a cultural means of communication as it seems that they are a family unit and have grown up together, and so as a familial cultural method of relaying information, the wink reflects how that is all that is needed for his sister to understand his intent. This could also relate to the global practice where winking is deemed as somewhat of a private form of communication, where individuals deem themselves so close to another that a mere wink is sufficient to relay a message.

Based on Pierce’s theory, there are three main elements to any sign, the sign form or type (representame), what it refers to (object) and audience’s sense (interpretant). An interesting sign in the video was how the sister communicates with her family. She talks with a harsh attitude towards all family members which expresses lots of jealousy towards her twin brother. An interpretant of this situation could be the common sibling rivalry in most families or it could demonstrate an insecure family relationship. The film has implicated how siblings fight over their parents attention via symbolic features.

In the film, the image of Ferris awake and lying in his bed is a symptom—a type of sign that makes us think of the thing it represents. Therefore, it is a “physical form” that leads us to the idea that Ferris is sick.
