During my training as a performer, I have set specific goals and aspirations for myself in this industry. To help me manifest and achieve these goals, I have created a timeline.

3 - 6 months

-Complete and gain my degree in musical theatre

-Get a dance reel and singing reel

- Get signed by an agency

-Meet contacts and build connections in the performing industry

-Attend in-house auditions at collage

6 - 12 months

-Attend auditions in London for cruise ship companies (e.g. Royal Caribbean, P&O, Celebrities) as well as for commercial work (e.g. Music videos, Concerts, Touring with artists, TV work and campaign work)

-Book my first professional job

- Carry on building connections in the performing industry and start to build a name for myself in the London Dancer scene by going to classes and places like Base, The Manor, Playground and Pineapple.

3 - 5 years

-To have established a name for myself in the commercial world by touring with artists, performing at concerts and events, dancing on TV shows.

In today's age, social media can greatly impact your employability, particularly if you're a performer. Many choreographers, agents, and casting directors look to social media to find and hire performers. Therefore, it's crucial that your social media presence presents you in the best possible light. It's the most effective way to showcase your talents and skills.

From now on, I want to focus on building my Instagram presence. To achieve this, I plan to upload my portfolio, which consists of body shots, headshots, and footage from the classes I attend at my university and open classes in London. I will also upload my dance and singing showreel, along with my spotlight link, so that any potential professionals who visit my Instagram page can see me at my best.

Potential Videographers

Showreels are crucial for a successful career in the entertainment industry. Agents and casting directors require showreels to assess your eligibility for their audition. Including showreels on your spotlight account increases your chances of being noticed. I have an appointment with Gibson Media on June 15th to shoot my showreel. Pete Faint from my university can create a singing reel for me. When speaking to friends, both have received excellent reviews on high-guilty videos and editing. The cost for Gibson Media's showreel is approximately £200, and my friend's singing reel is expected to cost around £100.

Here is some footage of content that I plan to include in my dance showreel. However, I still have a month to refine my choreography. I also plan to attend classes in London to learn some jazz choreography that I can add to my showreel. (see Appendix Two)

Despite the fact that setting goals for oneself is an effective way to plan for the future and achieve our aspirations, I am aware that it requires effort and dedication to make these goals a reality. Therefore, I have compiled a list of actions I need to take to aid me in achieving my objectives.

-Complete my final performance and professional practice to a high level and get my degree

-Build a strong portfolio that represents me to send to agents. With a dance and singing reel that shows me off to my best ability

-Attend classes and workshops in London, especially for choreographers who are currently working and holding auditions in the industry. So, I start creating a name for myself and network to help me move forward in my career

- Create a strong social media profile that includes a link to my spotlight, shows my showreels, and has footage of me from classes I attended. I can then use my social media as a form of self-representation to help me book jobs.

-Have a part-time job that gives me the flexibility to attend classes and auditions.

Performing career pathways

After several years of training as a performer, I have developed two main career pathways that I am drawn to and aspire to pursue.

My first pathway would be jobs in the commercial industry. Noticing that commercial has been a strength of mine throughout my training has further grown my interest and passion for making this my career.

This includes dream jobs like

-Touring with an artist

-Music videos

-TV performances (E.g. Masked singer, BGT)

-Corporate events

-Campaigns

Another pathway I want to pursue is triple-threat jobs in cruise ships and musicals. I have trained in the three disciplines (dance, singing, and acting) for the last several years, so working in musicals and cruise ships has always appealed to me. Musicals and cruise ships also tend to offer longer contacts than commercial jobs, which leads to more stability, which I am looking for more of in my career.

This includes dram jobs like

-Working for Cruise ship companies like Royal Caribbean, P&O and Carnival

-Musicals in the Westend and on tour around the county

It is difficult for anyone to turn their lifelong passion into a stable career that provides a stand-alone income, especially in an industry that is so unpredictable. As much as I have dreams and goals for a career as a performer, I like to see myself as a realist. Therefore, I have considered my career paths and goals in different areas.

As I approach graduation, I find myself at a crossroads. Performing has been my entire life since the age of 7, and I have never seriously considered any other career options. However, as I have matured, I realize that I want some degree of stability once I complete my education. Therefore, I have found it very beneficial to explore jobs that I can do alongside pursuing my career as a performer, as well as other career paths that I had never previously considered.

Here is a list of part-time jobs I have considered that offer me the flexibility to pursue my career as a performer.

-Retail in shops in my local town or in London so I am more accessible to do more classes and auditions

-Working as a receptionist in a gym as most gyms offer free memberships if you work there, which will be good to keep my fitness up.

-Bar work so I have my days available to attend auditions and keep up my training at open classes.

-Part-time work at my local sunbed shop, as it is very flexible. I can pick up hours when I can to earn some extra income to help with attending open classes and travelling.

Aside from being a performer, here is a list of career paths that interest me.

- Teaching Dancing, singing and acting at a dance school or opening up my own dance school.

-Looking into jobs in the Fashion/marketing industry

-Event planning/Wedding planning

-Becoming an agent and then casting director

As I approach graduation, I have started to think more in-depth about other career pathways I can pursue. My goal is to prepare myself for multiple outcomes once I graduate.

Although I have found it useful to outline my performing career goals in a timeline, I am still at the beginning of figuring out what alternative career pathway I could pursue. It can be overwhelming to consider all the different industries and options available, so I have decided to break it down. I will focus on goals for the next 12 months and create a list of aspirations and priorities to help me determine a career path that will align with them. By doing so, I hope to create strategies that will help me manifest my goals.

3-6months

-Create a strong CV

-Complete and gain my degree in musical theatre

-Keep a close eye on part-time jobs becoming available in my area

-Investigate possible online courses I can complete to help with my skills in other industries.

6-12months

-Get a part-time job at David Llyod so I have a membership and keep up my fitness levels high.

-Get another part-time job at the sunbed shop so I have an extra flow of money coming in on weekends.

-Gather more sense of where I want to go in life and choose any online courses that I can complete to get me there.

Aspirations & Priorities

-Have a constant steady income of money

-Be able to live a comfortable life with my income

-To be able to be creative in my job

To increase my chances of success in any career path I may choose, I have researched various methods to improve myself.

-Signing up to sites like Indeed, LinkedIn and Reed to keep me updated on jobs that are becoming available around me

-I can use the websites listed above to find available apprenticeships. If I decide to switch careers, completing an apprenticeship can enhance my CV and employability.

-Once I have a better idea of the jobs I would like to apply for, I can explore websites such as The Open University, Coursera, and Open Study College for online courses that can enhance my CV and make it more appealing to prospective employers.

Getting an agent

In the process of my third year, FAME, I didn't receive any offer from an agent. However, I am not discouraged by this. I plan to record high-quality reels displaying my talent and dancing and singing abilities, which I will upload to my Spotlight account along with my headshots and body shots. This will increase my chances of being discovered by agents who can help me further my career. I will be contacting as many agents as possible with my spotlight link and showreels and hope to receive some interest back.

Appendix one

Upon graduating, my plan is to move back to Epsom, Surrey, to live with my parents. I have several reasons for this decision. Firstly, I will have my own bedroom and access to a communal toilet at home. Additionally, I won't have to worry about paying for food shopping. My parents have agreed to charge me 15% of my income for rent, so if my income changes or I'm not earning any money, my rent will change accordingly. This is incredibly beneficial for me, as the average cost of a one-bedroom flat in London is currently £1,600 (Rightmove, 2024). Although I would like to experience living in London someday, for now, it makes more sense to live with my parents, who are flexible landlords.

Living in Epsom means that I have three stations close by that I can use to commute to London. These are Epsom, Ewell Village, and Chessington North, and they all take an average of 30 minutes to reach London. Furthermore, all three stations come under London zone 9, and the average cost of a ticket is £6.50 (Trainline, 2024). If I ever need a lift to the station, my mother is a stay-at-home mum and can give me a ride for free.

Finally, having my parents close by for support is invaluable to me, especially as I navigate through the next steps in my career. Moving back home means that I won't be alone, and I'll have their support and guidance when I need it.
