         <description><![CDATA[<p>Connecting the in-school and out-of-school, seemless transitions</p><p>Young people are readers.  they read more than their older counterparts</p><p>7.5 hours of media per day, (10 hours within this 7.5 due to multi-tasking.)</p><p>Gaming surpassed the movie industry in revenue, average age of gamers is 30.</p><p>100 texts per day for girls, 50 for boys.  </p><p>Culture clash between institution of learning where knowledge was scarce and </p><p>today's reality of readily available information.  </p><p>She believes Tech is making kids smarter and dumber at the same time.  </p><p>Interest-driven learning.  Seeking out others who share a similar passion</p><p>(research genius hour or 20% project)</p><p>Intergenerational communities, learning-oriented peer learning.</p><p>"For some kids, whose interests are not well represented, the online world is an identity space they can identify with."</p><p>They can find a like-minded concentration of those with similar passion and interests.</p><p>(What about the kids who aren't passionate about anything?)</p><p>Interests, Peer Culture, and Academics are the three circles that have to overlap in order to engage students. (Achieve MacArthur)</p><p>Privilege can foster this (specialized camps) but the internet can be a great equalizer.</p><p>Khan academy reachtion "We were promised jetpacks and we got lectures."   </p><p>Q and A forums are underappreciated.  Power of peer networks.</p><p>Badges for connected learning.  S.T.E.A.M. badge.  Personalized learning</p><p>eSports is a huge movement... high school and collegiate communities.</p><p>Base of passionate interest that is shared.</p><p>Build connected maker spaces.</p><p>At the end of each unit everyone has a big making activity.</p>]]></description>
