I would like to develop a project linked to the building of a grenhouse where we could grow vegetables to supply the canteen with greens that would be served to all students in every meal giving them access to a different diet, more balanced, I guess.
Also, the idea of creating a Forest School could be appropriate as my school is big and there are lots of green areas that need to be cleaned. This would, for sure, work and I think students would like the idea.
We are already an eco-school, so it wouldn't be hard to convince them.

I teach technology and one of the concerns I've always had, and I'd like to work out, is about solar electricity production at school. I think that we could install at least one solar panel at our school and study the amount of energy we can produce along the year, and also check how much we could save using it as the main source of electricity at school or at home. We could also look for new ways of electricity production, such as bike generators.
I think this could be linked to other proposals I've read here, like using comping area to analyze data fo this energy production, do a research on electricity cost at school.

We have several activities running right now, but I will refere an hydroponic pond. From an old pond in the school playground we created an hydroponic system. Right we have the pond with some fish and frogs, water lilly and other region water plants. Around the pond, we are harvesting lettuces that are feed from water pond.

As I said in the previous topic "sing for the climate!" is an interesting idea for a school project aiming to achieve an original song to sensitize people for climate and sustainability:
- including different subjects such as Portuguese and foreign languages for the lyrics, STEM for the content, arts for the music and choreography
- engaging several ages of students: older students could be challenged to write the song with the help of families and community; young students would be responsible for learning and singing the song to be recorded and shared in local and national social media, as an hymn to Education for Sustainability.

In our school there is a sustainability program that extends to all stages. The older ones are in charge of making theaters and songs to raise awareness among the little ones about what we can do to be a sustainable center. In primary and kindergarten it is proposed to use reusable containers for lunch; And characters like the Pink Panther have been placed in classes to remind them of the importance of turning off the taps and turning off the lights. I like the great example of a school from Montpellier. At my school, we work on a continuous collection of used paper that goes later for recycling. My school is surrounded by diferent Green areas where many bird species nest. I think it would be a great idea that my students get to know some of this species and their habits. I have been lucky enough to to participate 3 times in a project whereby children care for fish eggs in a hatchery in class, they monitor them carefully and when they are 6 weeks old, we release them into our local river. The project is run by the Clyde River Foundation and during the whole process we are supported by a group of scientists. There are many opportunities during and after the project to discuss issues surrounding sustainability issues. One of the main messages from the organisers is about making the children future stewards of their river and the responsibilities attached to that.

My school has a Gardening Club. Some students and teachers plant and take care of a vegetable patch. Some produce from that vegetable patch such as lettuce, cabbages, and herbs are then used in the preparation of food in the school canteen and others are sold and the money is used to buy more seeds and to improve the school garden.

I would share the classic "Vegetable garden", but almost pretty much of the schools located in Navarra have got one.
In order to share something different I would like to share with all of you a long-temp project that involves all the primary education (6 years- and more!).
In the first year, we share some seeds and each student has the responsibility of planting it somewhere (in their garden, in the mountain, at home in a pot...). They will have to develop the skills of caring a plant (giving it the right amount of water, taking are of it, leaving it in the sun...). Every month they take a picture of it, and as the time goes by, they will see its grouth.
At the end of 6th of primary they will all have a little tree. Some of the trees (hopefully all!) will provide fruits that can be brought for snack to school! this is also such a heathy habit :)

My school hasn't got a global sustainable project although we contribute with lots of different activities along the whole school year like eating healthy snacks in sustainable containers at breaktime.We also collect plastic tops that donate to the Red Cross for paying the treatment of children with cancer.We made expositions of different instruments made with recycled materials....but what I really want to try,when our new school becomes a reality,is to build up a garden where the students from different ages can plant and take care of different seasonal vegetables,where they can taste the different flavours or even sell the products.

We have built our own greenhouse and prepare an area in high school for vegetable production. It's been fantastic how students were not pretty sure about the activity at the beginning and how the have become into very proud farmers. We have experience the importance of soil texture, ph, we have decided where our plants will grow better and why. They have installed drip irrigation and take control of precipitation making graphs and charts in order to control it.

The high-school where I used to study is totally surrounded by an amazing natural environment; a forest full of trees, vegetation as a whole and a great animal biodiversity. It counts on a lot of usable land. However, nobody used to give importance to it, and consequently we did not make a good use of what surrounded us. Nowadays, I realize that this was a huge mistake as we did not know to value what we had. Thus, I would like firstly to put the focus on the educational institution of my area as that’s what is closer to me, and in this why, to attempt to increase both the students and the teaching staff’s consciousness in order to make them notice how rich is the natural environment that surround our town, and the great variety of activities that could be done by making a good use of it. Do not repeat the same mistakes! Let’s make the most of such environment; let’s begin to take care of it, to maintain it clean and to improve it; let’s set up small areas for the student’s practical exploitation, let’s also orientate the lessons to the outdoors as the students shown in the videos do; and let’s not delimit ourselves to a traditional and rudimental way of learning that cooped us up in the inside-classroom.

As we don't have space enough to have our own vegetable garden, our students make experiments in their own home (Example a girl compare an organic compost made with banana and sugar with an industrial fertilize to see which one was better to grow up tomatoes).
As a school we have a vertical garden made with a recycled wood pallet and we have also a programme to recycle paper, plastic, pens and pencils, old phones, printer cartridges and batteries.
Once a week, we have also a sustainable market, so children learn about responsable consume.
we are still learning and improving. Making a SWOP table could be a good beginning to become a real green school.

At my school, we participated in the Eco-Schools project. Through this, our environmental ideas are deepened and implemented.

We take care of a biological garden, compost, reduce and separate waste for recycling, sow native trees for later planting, go hiking and create eco-trails, reuse clothes and participate in many other activities that arise. Whenever possible, we work with local and national environmental associations.

Living with respect for environmental balance has to be seen as the new normal.

Start a veggie garden
This experiment should be carried out individually at home. In order to keep track of the project, students can take their own notes in order to create their own diary.
They can buy planter boxes or create their own. (Planter boxes should be at least 1 metre long and 1⁄2 metre deep. Boxes can be on wheels to move around your yard).

As their garden is likely to be outside they will need to consider whether the site is shaded (ideally they want something with moderate shade, so that the plants aren’t exposed to full sun or completely shaded).

They will also need to make sure they have water nearby to water their new garden – they don’t want to be lugging watering cans from one side of the yard/balcony to the other.
What sorts of vegetables will they plant? A trip to the nursery for some advice will help them decide on what’s best for the site they have chosen, the climate they live in and the time of year they want to start planting. Obviously it is a good idea to plant what they love eating or at the very least, foods they're not allergic too. If they really want to aim high, choose organic or heirloom seeds and plants. Good for the garden, good for them.

I have two small but fascinating ideas in my mind. First, I want to create with my students a school garden made up of leftovers in the kitchen (composting in the video). We are a vocational high school and in our food and drinks department, we can create a bin consisting leftovers, food scrabs for composting so as to use as organiz fertilizer in our school garden. Many ideas have come up when I have started to think about sustainability projects.
As I'm not teaching at the same high school every school year, I have decided to choose those ideas I could set up in every school, independent of the context.
For example, we could start an individual vegetable garden which could be set next to the windows in the classroom (if there wasn't enough outdoor space) or in the playground.
As I've written in othe padlets, I think that taking environmentally focused fieltrips are a good way to be aware of global climate and our impact in nature. School trips are a good way to learn about local issue and can be used to reforest their surroundings.
In addition, in every school I've taught teachers make posters and signs to remind people important rules or inform other students about an issue. These posters can remind to turn off lights and electronics devices when they're not using them, or using the public transport or ecofriendly means of transport to get to school.

A project carried out at a school where I worked some years earlier consisted on planting saplings and flower bushes which blossomed at different times of the year in the school yard and all along the surrounding fence. This allowed us not only to embelish it but also to split it up for different purposes, for example, separating the sports courts from the rest of the place. We even built a bush-surrounded space with benches and a fountain for relax and for some open-air classes in good weather. Needless to say, the students felt very proud of what they had done.

I teach English to kindergarten and primary school students, so at my school we have two interesting projects. We have a school garden where we grow mainly aromatic plants (because in the southern part of my country we use a lot of aromatic plants in our food) and we sell them to the parents (and we use the money to invest in school materials and to buy new seeds (and we have also the collaboration of local farmers who come to school regularly to explain the different stages of the process); we also have a recycling project which covers all the classes and every term we have a competition and choose the 1 recycling winner (per class) and they receive a prize.

I find it interesting to create a greenhouse in our school and to hold children responsible for their care. In previous courses we had composters at the center, but without an orchard or greenhouse, the children did not actively support this project.
In the next course we could start the greenhouse, recycle the rainwater and put the composters back with the idea of recycling the organic material in the garden.
Recycling of plastics and paper in our school is already a fact and yet, it is pending to involve families to use less plastics to wrap daily lunches ... and to reduce plastics at school.

Our school is really close to quite a few factories.
With the aim of working together towards a cleaner village, we have been asked to grow trees, we go hiking together (workers and students) once a year to get to know the world around us and we have recently been allocated a patch of land to grow a vegetable garden. We have not had the time to grow anything yet, but we could use the products to create some helthy snacks, even a small grocery market in town to raise money for school material.
Other than that, I really liked the idea of "the big pedal". Most of my students live just around the corner, yet parents use the car to drop them off. Riding to the school would benefit both their health and the environment.

As an English teacher, a nice project could be to train older students in order to do some awareness campaigns in the school to younger students, suggested and agreed beforehand with the principal of the school in the line of the school values and ethos, towards a climate-friendly school. Not only through talks to younger students, but also through workshops, modelling, and contests and, of course, using the English language.

I teach English and Spanish at a vocational school which offers electricity, building and welding studies...We have doing things in terms of recycling, but I consider that as we have plenty of space outside we could organise a crosscurricular project in order to build a greenhouse. My students are encouraged to recycle used paper and make new one. Then we use it for albums or scrapbooking. We also use the paper for making paper clay to be used to our crafts.

In my school, the students and teachers participate in a project "Planting the future" and we plant trees. This projet aims to: the recovery of nature, as well as the forest recovery and respective biodiversity of degraded areas (namely the areas affected by fires), and also the expansion of the area of native forest;
an increase in knowledge, awareness and consequent individual responsibility in terms of safeguarding the Natural Heritage of Madeira Island
and a strengthening of the active citizenship movement.

At our school, we have the Eco-escolas project and this year we developed a circular project. The students of the Cooking Course had training, in order to raise awareness about how to recycle food remains at the beginning of the year, as well as how to plant species of aromatic herbs. Since October, they have been depositing the remains of food from their practical classes, as well as the remains from the cafeteria, in an organic composter. In February, they prepared the soil using the remains decomposed in the compost and cultivated aromatic herbs, which are used in the Cooking and Restaurant-Bar Courses classes and even in the cafeteria.

I posted the "upcycling" flyer in our previous padlet. Upcycling is when a product is changed from its original intention to something totally new. For example, the filmy plastic bags are converted into Trex brand plastic wood-alternative My idea for this next school year is to introduce a system for our "field lunches." (In case you did not read my bio, I do not teach in a traditional school, I teach outdoors.) Many of our educators are in vested in teaching subject areas but forget that "actions speak louder than words" and they miss an opportunity to show students other ways for thinking. My idea is to introduce an easy to implement lunch plastic reduction and system. For example, when educators get their lunch components from our lunch room, some (many?) take a clean plastic bag to put their utensils & food service gloves in every day. Step 1: Take one plastic bag and use it just for utensils until it falls apart. Step 2: At lunch, use a plastic bag in which the bread or tortillas came in for the crumbs, rather than a new bag or the chip bags we can upcycle through Terracycle. Step 3: Encourage "Take what you eat, eat what you take" to encourage no food waste. Yes, we can compost, but better yet to Re-think taking more than you can eat and Re-duce rather than compost. Step 4: Use one of the reusable plastic containers that your food comes in to put food waste & crumbs in, thus reducing plastic bag use. Step 5: Designate students to do the lunch jobs, such as collecting chip bags and folding them neatly, collecting crumbs, collecting disposable gloves (also for upcycling.) Follow these steps to introduce a system and you, too, can have a former student remember the system 14 years later and come back to teach at NatureBridge. I know this student because I ride bikes with her and she is excited to help with instituting this change in systems now that she teaches here, too!

We had prototype greenhouse production before covid 19 in our school workshop. we were growing parsley and barley. We had a simulation of greenhouse cultivation activities based on obtaining efficiency from the product by preventing greenhouse gas emission by creating a natural irrigation system and getting photosynthesis with enough sun. We have transformed this as an alternative to a garden design that is necessary for animal breeding (cattle). students portray animal figures from cardboard or toys. Every year, students in my school celebrate Carnival. Usually we choose a theme (for example: "North Pole" and there will be a variety of costumes such as penguins, Eskimoes, polar bears, etc). As I said before, it is very important to have a whole-school approach and to involve all stakeholders actively.
We can start from a common project. It can be anything (a greenhouse, a fashion show, etc.) Teachers should come together and think about a cross-curricular approach. I would like to look at involving the whole school in Forest School learning. I have a plan that I am sharing with my Head of making one lesson a week and Forest Schools lesson. I would like to introduce a second hand clothing market. In my opinion a really interesting project that could be done through many disciplines in a school about sustainability is the recycle of the frying oil. It is something that all of us maybe through it away but it can be used to produce biodiesel and even soaps. So students can look for their uses in a physics lesson, make grarhics about how much frying oil we use at home at maths lesson. Then in a chemisty they may try to make their own soaps with this oil. It is easy and we can find they way in youtube. And finally in language we can write with our students an artcle about that local newspaper in order to inform all the citizens about this kind of recycle. That project can be done with the cooperation of parents, as students bring the frying oil from home. So parents would also think about recycle such a product.

In our center we already have a greenhouse and a vegetable garden, with plants that attract butterflies to preserve their variety. However, it's entirely runned by the biology department and part of the 1rst year curriculum. We started this year a cross -disciplinary project on plastic pollution and consumption, involving citizenship, physics and English classes, which application ended-up (was supposed to, we haven't had time to apply it) in reducing plastic consumption for snacks and better recycling during recess and in classes. I'd like more teachers from all the departments to be involved, as well as a wider range of learning grades, even vocational education. I think we are also missing the participation of parents association. For our school, specifically, I would like to see a composting program, and a carbon compensation one for all the children and teachers that are travelling. Next year we will participate in an eTwinning project about our environment. Would it be great to have the students who are going to travel to plant some trees around the city, even in the school backyard. We have a big no man's land that could be re-forested and used by the entire community. So all the groups who are travelling could calculate their airplaine flight carbon impact and add a small cost to the trip to buy trees accordingly.

In Malta tap water is not drinkable and so unfortunately several house holds need to buy bottled water that comes in plastic bottles. The amount of generated plastic waste is huge. So a project my Biology students had done was to collect plastic bottles from all school students and families. 100s were collected. These were cut to a specific size, fit into each other and used to build a greenhouse on the school grounds. Its inner walls were also decorated with empty plastic bottles, but with herbs planted in them. Herbs are used during cookery lessons at our own school. As a first and foremost project, I would encourage the school to bear sustainability contents in the curriculum and to get more commitment from the school comunity on the issue(school framing). Then, as a content based project, I would focus on three directions: 1. Recycling organic / non-organic. For composting the first one, to sort out waste the other, 2. Checking electricity and water consumption, 3. Planting a vegetable garden and an orchard. All three phases would be supported by audits, contests, exibits and visits to other schools. The sustainability project I´d like to present has to do with promoting sustainable food habits with a focus on different actions:
1- Reducing meat consumption
2- Staying in season. Consume season products.
3-Reducing waste (for example, an interesting initiative is that taken in Australia with Nude Food: food that is not wrapped in foil, plastic or commercial packaging).
4.- Local products (reducing carbon dioxide footprint).
Below I introduce information about Nude Food, an interesting action taken in Australia.
The project should be carefully planned in different phases.
In a first phase, we could engage our students and the community (parents) in analyzing the starting point: how many local or foreign products they consume, where does the food they usually buy at the supermaret come from, how to calculate de carbon dioxide footprint of our food, and so on...)
Then, in a second phase we could involve our students and families in changing their food habits: using sustainable lunch boxes, increasing consumption of vegetables, ...). In a third phase, we could involve the whole school in taking actions in order to raise awareness in the community (giving informative leaflets at the local supermarkets,...). In a finally phase, we should evaluate the project taking into account the actions developed.

Students designed cars using recycling materials. By attaching tires to their cars, they designed a different mechanism where the conversion of potential energy into kinetic energy (motion energy).

We have a school that sees to the south so we have affluent light and a big garden to cultivate herbs, vegetables and flowers. Our target is to teach children how to cultivate, recycle their garbage from their lunchboxes as well as involve their families in this process. What is more we would love to produce our electricity needs through solar panels although it seems quite difficult due to lack of funds. In our school we made a playground from old tires, we painted them, we created different games of them. The other project is to collect batteries and separate waste collection. In early spring students plant vegetables and herbs in school garden. In the end of the school year they donate these vegetables to people in need.

Some years ago, I was in a school where, at the very beginning of the course, both teachers and students prepared a small vegetable garden with tomatoes, lettuces, courgettes and cucumbers. It was the responsability of all members of that school to take care of it and at the end of the course, they consumed them at a kind of party inviting the families. I would like to develop a project about bioindicators study in order to evaluate the environmental quality of the ecosystems (air, soil, ecological community,...), not only lichens and plants, but also animals; I think it could be an attractive and motivating idea for the students, because they would take part in the project by observing, investigating, taking photos, and analysing the information in order to evaluate the ecological quality of the environment.

There is an interesting project about lichens as bioindicators, LiquenCity, a citizen science project to find out what is the diversity of lichens that live in trees in Madrid and Barcelona and relate it to air quality and there are many schools which already participate in it.

Our school has a green flag and our Eco-school club runs a recyclable waste collection project every year. The whole community collaborates and with each passing year we increase the number of members. We also cultivate a biological garden, which also serves as occupational therapy for our students with mental and physical pathologies. The products harvested from the garden are distributed free of charge at school, by students, teachers and assistants. We also participate annually in the reforestation of a hill close to the school, promoting the direct contact of our students with the forest environment, trying to instill in them a sense of belonging and the need for preservation. In addition to planting new trees, students can experience the colors, smells and sounds of the forest.

We use a lot of olive oil in the medeterranean diet!

An idea that is easy to implement is to organise the collection of olive oil cooking resuids at the school. It can activate students and families, neighbours and local autorities. The collected olive oil resuids can be converted almost by 96% to biofuel, the school can benefit some income this way, and the sewage network works more efficiently.

Additionally, we teachers can:

- use some of the collected oil to produce pure traditional home made soap, a practice almost abandoned even at the olive oil producing areas

- integrate the soap making process in to our chemistry lesson reffering to oils and saponification- explain the difference between home made and commercial soap

- intergrate the biofuel production to our physics and chemistry lesson

- integrate the range of olive tree in the geography lesson in the discussion about the mediteranean climate

-- investigate the possible effects of climate change on olive oil production and economy of Medeterranean countries

- focus attention on healthy diets

Greening our Footprint

Climate change crisis is a complex environmental, scientific, individual, and social situation that earth planet faces at the same time that its development and technification. Students are involved on news related to current threads and future catastrophes in which will be experienced if humanity keeps on emitting pollutant gasses that retain heat under atmosphere or any other harmful actions that cause environmental damage.

But are students as citizens a cause of or may also be solution to climate change? Scientifically dealing with climate crisis presents a great challenge for students and offers teachers from any subjects a perfect opportunity to foster and nurture students’ full potential through different learning approaches.

This project will help to mitigate future problems with their current researches, making meaningful their learning process and enable them to take ownership over their own learning and results.

At my school last year we created a forestry project.
We created a nursery of native plants to be planted in arid areas of the community.
The nursery is created with seeds offered by the municipal environment department and with the collection of small shoots of trees that we find in the forest where we play.
In partnership with the city council and the parish council, the students went to a barren lot of a local association and planted 50 trees so that when they grow up, a pedagogical forest open to the school community will grow.
From this nursery, each child took home a tree to plant in his garden.
This project received the "Handsprint for the Forest" award from the Blue Flag of Europe Association, within the scope of the Eco-schools project.

I have read lots and lots of great ideas I’d love to implement in our school. But first and foremost I do want to make something effective so I am going to keeep on insisting on two main points:

· Not wasting paper. Here, we, teachers are the guilty ones: It ‘s incredible the quantity of useless photocopies some teachers do.

· Reusing clothes. Last year our school organised an interdisciplinary project with parents, teachers and students called “Long Life Market”. The first goal was to sell items and donate the obtained money to some NGOs. Then, the things that hadn’t been sold, were recycled by students to create different objects (pencil cases, bags, decorated T-shirts..) they tried to sell them.

In Portuguese schools, there are many projects that aim to raise young people's awareness of the issue of sustainability. There are schools with a green flag - Eco-schools, there are schools with vegetable gardens, etc. The choice of the projects is mainly related to the area of the country where the school is located.

Working in a school in Oeiras, next to the sea, projects realated to beaches and sea gain strength.

Thus, one of the projects that gave me the most satisfaction was the cleaning of the beaches.

Groups of students and parents, together with teachers, and equipped with the necessary personal protective equipment, volunteered to clean up an extensive beach and the surrounding area.

In addition to the benefits for nature, we spent many hours outdoors, by the sea, with evident benefits for physical and psychological health.

As the most important task for an ESD school is to give students, knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to empower them to promote sustainable development, I will start by giving information about current data in our planet, calculate our CO2 footprint impact individually, discuss values and possible attitudes watching videos such as, plastic in Oceans or deforestation ones. Promoting changes and commitments that will be recorded in a diary in English for a settled time.

Through the implementation of the School Action Plan the following activities were organized and carried out:
The students were introduced to Climate Change and Global warming (Green-house effect) by by their teachers or by getting familiarized with the existing bibliography.
They watched the recommended documentaries and films e.g. “HOME”, “WALLE”
They searched and studied the existing Greek Legislation on the Protection of the Environment
They created posters related to Climate Change and Greek Legislation about Environmental Issues which they displayed on the walls outside the School Science Laboratory
They conducted measurements of the electricity consumed at school
They carried out assessments (such as waste and energy audits) to measure our school’s progress in becoming more sustainable
Students were assigned to switch off the lights when they leave their classrooms
They planted trees, medicinal herbs and flowers
They maintained the school garden by doing all the seasonal work (pruning, digging, fertilizing, harvesting, production of oil)
They are reinforced to treat others with respect
They created a questionnaire on Climate Change to raise students’ awareness of the issue but also to increase their participation in the recycling programme being implemented in our school.

The most innovative environmental initiative developed by our school was the establishment of a partnership with Piraeus University of Applied Sciences, &Technology (Laboratory of Soft Energy Applications and Environmental Protection). Our students attended a seminar on alternative sources of energy, on electric cars, solar panels and wind power turbines and took part in workshops of measuring energy consumption on the university premises and laboratories.

A team of the University researchers visited our school and delivered an introductory seminar on carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and its implications on the environment. Then they conducted in vivo an experiment where the students measured the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the rise in temperature and the composition of the atmospheric air.

On a second visit to University the students concentrated on the use of alternative sources of energy, attended workshops and visited the university laboratories.

During the project, the students worked in teams, gathered information about wind power turbine types and decided to build their own wind turbine at school. They searched on the internet educational applications of wind turbines, consulted the researchers at the university and finally selected a special educational wind turbine equipped with a meter which was ordered for the school laboratory. After its installation, they conducted measurements about the amount of power it can safely produce and the energy saved by its use.

The students kept records of the energy consumption at our school and calculated the potential reduction of the school’s CO2 footprint.

This year I teach English in a Arts School. In my school we have implemented the idea of sustainability in, let´s say, "our way". As we teach jewellers, so the Project they worked on during a few months was related to creating sustainable pieces of jewellery. The students did a really good job. They created pieces from recycled materials, for example. Some of them used their jewellery to show their protest against some aspects related to the environment. For instance, there was piece that represented a turtle trapped in plastic.

I would like to start a project in my school to focus more on waste products of our school. Sure we have different streams for our waste, like paper but we don't have anything for the water, and other streams. It's interesting to investigate how are streams are separated and how much is re-used. And if we can re-use some of this by ourself or in our local community. If we can take it a step further: we can look for ways to re-use like old toys or books and clothes that we wear. How can we impact these streams? There is no doubt recycling is the mainstay of a sustainabilility project. Obviously, it must be understood as reducing, reusing and finally recycling.
Both projects shown in the video are very interesting and show us how different areas at school must be connected to make the project satisfactory.
Another goal could be to get our own electricity (or the most important amount of it) that is to supply ourselves with electricity. The question is how and it could be through solar panels in order to produce our own energy or the most of it at least.

I watched the video and I liked the idea about planting plants. I was inspired to use rubber wheels to decorate the schoolyard by coloring it, filling it with soil, and planting it as decorative plants. Well, after getting some inspiration from the videos as well as from amazing contributions shared on this padlet, I would like to develop an action-oriented project making coordinated use of what we already have at school.

Many students and teachers have their lunches at the school canteen every week day. Well, if about 1/3 of the kitchen waste can be composted, I thought about suggesting the school board and or other stakeholders such as the local Town Hall, in the first place, asking for support. Then, I was planning to contact local waste management companies that provide sustainable waste solutions and recycling services in order to provide some development sessions for staff, non-teaching staff (obviously kitchen personnel, but not exclusively) and students on the advantages of having compost bins and how to take most advantage of them, and well, maybe they could offer some compost structures (compost bins); in any case, able hands could also build a DIY compost bins, for example, from pallets.

Though there aren’t many trees or shades in the school garden area, I believe we could take more advantage of the lawn as well from as an existing aquaponics greenhouse. Therefore, with the needed support from the Town Hall with machinery, the compost bins contents would be spread around the selected areas; parents and local producers would be contacted to volunteer with the first products to be cultivated in the school grounds.

All this would be achieved in collaboration with the school’s sciences teachers to mastermind the best products and the places to plant them.

My school participates in Eco-Schools projects every year in straight coordination with the “Foundation for Environmental Education” promoted in Portugal by ABAE. The activity I am more connected with is the organic gardening project. We grow vegetables in about 200m2 trying to join the agro-forestry and "Hugelkultur" movement. This way, students got familiar to permanent agriculture, that is permaculture. With this organic gardening project, we care for biodiversity, growing many different plants at the same time. It is common to see our veggies together with several flowers that attract all sort of insects. In our organic garden we also have trees, and some bushes and weeds. We have three spots with water so that insects and birds can drink. We hope to attract frogs, too. This year, we even built a house for the birds to build their nests in Spring.

I believe that schools should be put at the foregront of the global climate crisis. This school year we are participating in a eTwinning project: Eco-students against climate change.

The Secondary schools participants are IES Cid Campeador (Valencia, Spain),

Viešoji įstaiga Šiaulių universiteto gimnazija (Šiauliai, Lithuania) and

Collège Saint-Winoc ( Bergues, France).

Students are between 15 and 16 years old.

Students investigate climate change, the impact of human activity in global warming, the greenhouse effect and other environmental issues.

They reflect on the way they consume and implement different actions at school and at home to contribute to stop climate change and preserve the nature.

They have participated in European mobility week, in Climate week, in Earth's Day and in many other activities.

Students have organized into 6 international teams. Each international cooperative team has chosen an environmental issue to investigate and to prepare a presentation to show the results to the other teams.

Finally, they all together will elaborate an audiovisual to be shared with the schools to disseminate these measures.

During the development of the project, students participate in discussions, use their critical thinking and creativity to work collaboratively.

Also, there’s a very big impact of the project at schools and at home.

The project is developed in eTwinning throught all this school year (from September 2019 to July 2020) but the sustainability of the project will remain because the results will be disseminated in each school in cultural conferences in the following years.

In my school this year I created a project called "At school with a smile ...". It is based on the ideas I had when I made my Erasmus Job Shadowing project in Sweden. Last year we went to a natural area in our city with a group of students and listened to the natural sounds we heard there, imitating each of the sounds we listened to in a separate group memory. I work at an international kindergarten and preschool as a special needs teacher-- this means I spent a lot of time in many of classes. I would like the develop a role of an Environmental and Sustainability Coordinator and use my club that I run as my student committee. The coordinator at my school meet together often and spread information quickly and efficiently throughout the school. For example, each year group has a coordinator.

I think a great first start is to have the preschoolers conduct a survey with teachers and children about what they know about climate change and sustainability. I think they would love to interview others and then we could compile the information into a report using math and literacy.

From there we could vote on an issue and method of informing others. For example, doing a play at assembly, organizing a field trip, inviting an expert in the field, planning and making resources or games, etc. The children love being leaders, especially as many have younger siblings.

An example of a project we could do is a rainwater collection project because it is easy for the children to benefit from and see visually. This water can be used to water our new raised bed garden. I also think that the preschoolers can be in charge of making signs and reminders for the young children on how to treat the plants in the raised beds.

Once this is in place, we could find a way of spreading knowledge on how to take care of it, and information about the process-- followed by some follow up observations and connections.

They are more than just growing food, which of course is valuable, but more take a look at the environmental needs and address them using creative and artistic methods.

It gives me inspiration but at the same time discourages me a little bit to see these two wonderful schools in action. I am the coordinator of projects like these in my school and I really find it hard to get my colleagues on the same page with me. Sometimes I feel that everything that is outside of the regular curricullum needs to be kind of 'pushed' by the schoolboard to make it possible. I do really think, like is said in the videos, that the schoolboard has to make sustainability a key point to make things happen and also guarantee it for the long road.
We do have some good practices in our school, my experience is that when the kids design a project for themselves that it has more impact than when it just has to be done because it is in the curricullium. One of our good practices is that we have a subject called 'design and investigate' which is a subject that can be chosen, it is not obligatory. In this subject kids get a case and they have to design a solution for that case, often sustainable. For example a sustainable design for a beach house, or a sustainable solution for water management in a municipality, or a new vegan cake for a local lunchroom. Nice to know is that when the kids present their ideas, a representative of the company also joins to see what they did and give them feedback about their ideas. Once a while they even use the ideas of our pupils in their company.

In my school we implemented a project concerning the limitation of food waste in the school bins. First the students dug in the school bins to record the kind or food waste in them. A questionnaire was sent to the students' parents informing them about the situation and asking them to answer questions about the food that their kids consume during school. Many issues where investigated throughout the curriculum i.e. food miles, hidden water, desertification, pollution, green house effect, climate change e.t.c . Initiatives shown in the video of Montpellier School are great, and we make some of them in my school. For example, separate rubbish into different trash cans, do not use plastics at the cafeteria, promote the using of bicicles to go to school every day, create a vegetable patch and eat vegetables at school, etc. But some of the ideas need more infrastructure, for example, having a big nature area to teach and learn, doing lessons outdoors, build and use solar pannels, use greenhouses to plant and grow vegetables, making compost with the organic rubbish from the cafeteria, instaling water tanks and other systems to reduce the use of water at school,... To conclude, I think that we need more investment in education.

All the ideas presented in both videos are interesting, useful and even inspirational. We do many activities and projects using Education to Sustainable Development, like ecological activities around the school area and in the whole village, planting trees and flowers in the school garden. We even intend to create a vegetable garden and all students to take care of it. A project my students were involved in a few months ago was a project at national level and students had to recycle and reuse different objects like plastic bottles, carton, cans, tins, canvas and other different objects and, using their imagination to create different useful things. They worked both individual and in groups and they enjoyed it a lot. Then we took photos of the created things and sent them to the project competition. Another project my school was involved in was also a national project ''School Zero Waste'' where students and teachers alike had to collect as much carton and paper as possible during a specific period of time. There were many schools involved and we won some devices for our school. All of us being involved for the same cause and working together was an an example of Sustainability, I think.

The school I currently work at has its own greenhouses which are currently used by a special educational needs programme to teach gardening and floristry. In my country the government has launched a project that is called: "Schools towards sustainibility".
This project gives instructions and help to the schools that attach to it.
Besides, the schools have to fulfill some requirements to continue in this project. Some of them are the reduction of the expenditure on water, electricity and heating. Moreover, the promotion of the public transport or another ways such as bicycles or walking.
That's why my schools is doing many changes to get a reduction on the consumption and to change the energy non-renovable to another that could be renovable. There the students have an important work because they have to study how to do it and how to get the materials that they need to carry out this.
An other important action that we are doing is to reduce the waste, also we are recycling and reusing. For example, some of the works that we do in the school are with materials that are recycled . Furthermore, all the paper that we use is recycled and we are trying to reduce its use.
That's an amazing project and also we are thinking on new ideas to get the sustainibility of our school.

In Alentejo, precipitation is not constant. We are in the south of Portugal and our country has many water problems in this geographical area.

Fresh water saving is one of the main topic about natural resources and climate crisis that I share with my students every school year.
One big goal for whole-school ESD will be force local administration to separate the quality of water used for cooking and drinking from the one used for sanitation and personal hygiene.
