What did Gregor Mendel do in his experiment?

In his experiment Gregor Mendel mixed types of peas together because peas were an easy thing to track traits with. He was the one that debunked all current ideas on how traits are passed down and came up with a new idea of inheritance. For this experiment he used different types of peas such as wrinkled, round, yellow, and green.

The results of the first experiment came showed that every plant was the same and had the same traits. This was known as the first generation. This is called heredity and happened because all of the chromosomes created the same traits for all of the plants. (In both of his experiments he found that homozygous recessive plants are rarer than hetereozygous or dominant allele plants.)

Why is it important?

This is important today because without Gregor Mendel, we might have a somewhat primitive idea on how traits are passed down. We can also make more accurate predictions of offspring with the experiments that he conducted.

This was the important generation because it showed from a purple and a white flower came a white flower instead of the usual purple. The DNA of the white flower showed this time and so did the recessive genes. After these experiments we have a more advanced idea of genetics and punnet squares. (In the experiments he did not use plants with co dominance or incomplete-dominance.)

My thoughts...

Before I started this unit I thought that plant cells would work differently than animal ones because of the variety. I still would have thought that if it weren't for Gregor Mendel. I learned a lot from probability to phenotype and genotype. It's weird to think that traits could come from something as small as a cell or even a nucleus.
