In an environment where a minority group is being oppressed, change derives from being active and spreading awareness. When trying to change a system that marginalizes your community taking initiative is important, and being a bystander only perpetuates oppression. Specific examples of people taking initiative to spark change include people like Martin Luther King Jr. who inspired many people and advocated for change under a system that oppressed him.

The farmworker struggle in California is one of the most notable campaigns for Latino rights in the 1960s. The strike lasted 5 years and during this time Cesar Chavez organized a national boycott of table grapes that won widespread support. In 1970 grape growers agreed to a contact that granted most of the workers' demands, including union recognition and higher wages and benefits. The strike against California grape growers was launched by an Asian American activists. Larry Itliong played a key role in this strike. He and Filipino activists helped form the United Farm Workers (UFW). Latinx and Chicano children weren't getting the help they needed at school, and many people were living in poorer conditions than the white people around them. Dolores Huerta (a teacher in San Joaquin) said that she "couldn't stand seeing kids come to class hungry and needing shoes". Disabled people didn't have fair access to school. Ed Roberts was told that because he was paralyzed from Polio and he needed a respirator, that he would be "too disabled for work". Roberts started a program to make it easier for disabled students to attend school. He was the one who introduced ramps, curb cuts, and allowing students to use languages like ASL and Braille. With the groups that started or helped civil rights movements beginning with them realizing a problem based on evidence and repetitive actions against their group (like how for native american/indigenous civil rights,  "Local activists believed that this imbalance reflected police harassment
of Indians."), or just through them being sick and tired of the hate and discrimination towards them. They also all share the commonality of being different, to each other but also within their own groups. For example, within the black power and black rights, there were Stokely Carmichael who had a strong and powerful focus, not only demanding legal rights and intigration, but "the cultural, political, and economic power to
strengthen black communities so they could determine their own
futures.". While in other parts of the black power movement, Muhammad Ali was fighting injustice and racial inequality from his position as a popular boxer. So while they all did have many similarities, they were also varied and incredibly nuanced.

I think its important to show real, solid groups or people, as though it can be a bit narrowing or specific within the movement, it bring a bit more of an emotional side to the memorial/monument. I'd also focus on what that group wanted, like the black panthers 10 point program, outlining what they wanted and what they believed they deserved and what they needed, as that is probably one of the most important things. Its obvious that fighting for justice, equality, and civil/individual rights was a large task. Its still being fought for today, and its due to large opposition to it, from racism to sexism, albeism, and other. So it would be the most surprising, unfortunately, that this history was just covered up. Though more likely, I think, is just its lack of discussion over it, and less focus on it, which could still very well be for the same reason, but just in a less forward process. Another reason is just becuase our government, and many in it haven't been able to own up to the mistakes they have made towards minorites and others in this country that haven't been protected just talked about enough, as part of the U.S's history. Much of what the document discusses is a lot of active civil rights for individual groups, be it black people, asian american /APIA, women, people with disabilites, older people, ect. And while its focus isn't purely on the immense knowledge, discovery, progress, and work done by many in the U.S. who aren't talked about or taught enough, all that this document is about is definetly worth and needed to be recognized and known in US society.
