First impressions matter the most. Therefore, when showing up for an interview, dressing to impress will be a key aspect to land you the job. 

Depending on the type of job you are getting interviewed for, the restrictions, and requirements for professionalism, will either increase or decrease. The three types are as follows: Formal Business Attire, business casual attire, and casual attire. 

Required for jobs such as banking, finance, or law

For men; choose a two-piece suit of colors black, gray, or navy

• Accompany this with a dress shirt, and a conservative tie (tie that is modest, and of a darker color than your shirt), as well as polished shoes

  • Never go with an untucked shirt, that is not acceptable

  • Distracting patterns on any of your clothes are unacceptable

  • Socks are necessary

  • Don’t fold the pants, nor have mismatching clothing

Ideal and required for more informal yet not casual environments; examples of where this attire would be acceptable are anything dealing with hospitality, retail, education, or administration

For men, wearing chinos or dark-dressing pants with a collared shirt and blazer is great to fit this category. 

• Wearing a tie will depend on the company; some require it, some don’t 

  • Similarly to the formal attire, tucking your shirt is encouraged as it is deemed as proper dressing

  • There are fewer restrictions on the actual colors that you can wear for your shirts and ties; however, do make sure to make them match as patterns are pleasant for human beings.

This type of attitude is common in a start-up and or tech company

• This could include  jeans, chinos, simple shirts, collared polo shirts, and loafers

• Allows for freedom, yet do not show up looking like you just came out of bed

Overly extravagant/playful earrings, excessive amounts of rings, necklaces, or dangling earrings are unacceptable

• They demonstrate that you don’t understand the environment of your soon-to-be workplace place

• This could be interpreted as a form of disrespect and an intentional attempt to waste an interviewer’s time

However, you can use your wedding ring, small earrings, or singular minimalistic watch (also applies to other things as well)

• Feel free to express yourself, yet you don’t want to seem arrogant or make yourself distracting to the interviewer

  • If he/she takes more glances at you due to your distracting jewelry rather than paying attention to your answers, you will most likely not get your points across or the job
