After laying under the tree for a few minutes the tree becomes a benefit to the pair's relationship. The men were fighting over the territory, including the tree, but the tree resisted human possession and in turn trapped both of them in its control. Had it not done this, the two men would have remained enemies for life and it would have continued for generations.
