"A fierce shriek of the storm had been answered by a splitting crash over their heads, and ere they could leap aside, a mass of falling beech tree had thundered
down on them." (Saki 190)

The tree represents chance in this story. Had the tree not fallen on the two men, at least one of them were likely to die that night, killed by the other. If this occurred, their feud would go on for yet another generation.

"'Lying here tonight, thinking, I’ve come to think we’ve been rather fools; there are better things in life than getting the better of a boundary dispute.'" (192)

After laying under the tree for a few minutes the tree becomes a benefit to the pair's relationship. Because the two are stuck in the same situation together, they enemies realize that they do not hate each other; their quarrel was started by their forefathers.

The tree represents nature's wrath and how luck could affect one's future. The men were fighting over the territory, including the tree, but the tree resisted human possession and in turn trapped both of them in its control. Had it not done this, the two men would have remained enemies for life and it would have continued for generations.

The tree was the interloper at the beginning of the story, and was the conflict that the two men must have faced together. This brought the two men to reconcile with each other and break all of their past quarrels. But when they do decide to declare a truce, nature's wrath and pure coincidence, once again, becomes the interlopers of their friendship when the wolves show up and becomes their demise.
