Throughout his narration of his own backstory, Dr. Manhattan constantly references time, beginning many text-boxes with “It’s [Specific Date]”, as he reflects on his past. Curiously, while the events shown in the comic panels occur in chronological order, his narration is constantly going back and forth through time. This shifting of time references both Osterman’s irrational human side (emotion-driven nostalgia making him live in the past) and his super-powered, almost divine side, which allows him to see into the future.

The use of the “Tales of the Black Freighter” comic is interesting, as it gives a more lively parallel of life within Watchmen at any given point. The comic does a good job of situating itself in spots that are worth accentuating, letting the reader doubly consider the actions at hand before moving on to the next situation.

The climax of the text leaves the protagonists entirely outsmarted. It’s an interesting scene to witness, as it serves as a clear delineation from the standard ‘good defeats bad’ that reigns supreme through all other comics, and most other stories. It’s also interesting to witness how this idea is further expressed with Veidt detailing his plan after he’s already put it into fruition, and making sure to show as such to Rorschach and the rest. This entire section serves the purpose of separating the text even further from the average comic, and it does so successfully.

The inclusion of the New Frontiersman article at the end of the chapter has a great importance within the graphic novel, as it gives insight into the world of Watchmen, especially the landscape of media and politics amidst Cold War tensions and debates over the legality and morality of masked vigilantism. The New Frontiersman is spoken of by many throughout the novel as a right-wing propaganda outlet, even being implied to have radicalized Rorschach himself. However, these claims only serve to tell the reader about the content of the newspaper, with its excerpts actually being shown providing the readers with a chance to evaluate the journal’s merits themselves. Reading the articles on one’s own, not only can a clear bias be observed directly, but the authors’ rhetorical choices can also be analyzed to provide insight into how exactly they plan on affecting the public to their side.

In the first pages of the opening chapter, there is a brilliantly crafted scene of the Comedian’s murder which occurs alongside the investigation into his murder. In these pages, panels of the detectives talking about the murder are interspersed with the scene of the actual murder, with the investigators’ dialogue serving as narration to the event itself. For example, one of the men says at the beginning of the sequence: “which means the occupant was home when it happened”, the reader is shown a scene of someone breaking into the victim’s home while he is watching television. The contrast between the calm, dialogue-heavy investigation scene with the intense, fast-paced (yet devoid of dialogue) image of the murder itself shows a juxtaposition of moods which is found quite often in the world of The Watchmen.
