He was born on September 25th 1987 in New Albany, Mississippi. At first he wrote poetry until later on he began writing novels set in the American South. Before William went through many career such as a railroad financier, politician, soldier, farmer, businessman, lawyer, and novelist. In his writing he was known for using southern speech as well as illuminating social issues.
