You are in charge of your classroom! Decide what your non-negotiables are and stay true to them. Do not always frame things as questions but instead say "This is what we're doing." or "This is how it should be done." Don't be afraid to have students redo/restart until it is done to your expectations (entering the classroom, etc). It seems like a waste of time now, but it will save you a lot of time later. ;)

Stacking:

For poor grades I mention a difference in performance based on past assignments (be vague about which assignments) and voice a concern that you have moving forward.

Mention what assignment(s) they are struggling with and what steps can be done to get their student back on track.

Mention how their student contributes to the class positively.

I use wacky news articles when I can - for example: When introducing quinceañeras - there is a story of Rubi who’s father did an open invite on social media - they ended up with 20K people attending and the mayor a town over gave her a car! Holidays we talk about Spain’s baby jumping festival where masked people jump over babies to cleanse the air from demons. Anytime you get a little “shock value” will be helpful!

Prop or Object – Bring in a surprising object and ask, “What do you think this has to do with today’s lesson?”

Movement Challenge – Start with a short stretch, freeze dance, or movement that ties into the lesson theme.

Countdowns/Signals: Use a clap pattern, drum beat, or call-and-response (“Ready to dance?” / “Yes, we are!”) my fav.....Criss cross applesauce / Spoons in the bowl!

Line/Spot Procedures: Assign floor spots or numbers so students know exactly where to go without chaos.

Positive Reinforcement: Praise specific behaviors (“I like how Jorden is standing tall in dance frame”). Answers a question...Give yourself a positive Dojo

Sometimes you can give extra passes, candy or shutouts to students that bring in an article you have been talking about that they also find in the news. First student to get it in to you per class etc. Keeps them looking and staying up with current events!

Do not be afraid to include parents when things go well then when things are not going well you will already have made a connection with them and they feel you truly do have their child's best interest and more apt to be receptive to your concerns.

Know what your expectations are and what the consequences are for they not being followed. Do what you say you are going to do. Don't make a rule/policy you are not willing to enforce.

If you are not having fun they are not having fun thus learning is probably not happening. Engage them in the lesson. Think how do you use your students to promote learning? Where are they communicating, collaborating, creating, critically thinking? Sitting quietly is not going to happen, not in their genes at school age!

I do a monthly newsletter to keep families informed. I also have parents send in videos when they participate in home challenges. This has received tons of responses!! I'm not sure who likes it more the students or parents!
