Character Analysis of Troy Maxson

Troy was an African American husband and father who lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was an outstanding baseball player, and his dream was to play professional baseball. Because of this, he was also a very cocky person to everything in his path of life. It all got crushed because of racism so that left him heartbroken and angry. With his anger issues he started committing crimes and he was sent to jail. After prison he met Rose who is now his wife. He took most of his anger out on Rose and Cory. Cory wanted to play football, but Troy didn't let him because he thought racism was going to get in the way just like it did with his dreams. Troy is also selfish. Troy took money from his disabled brother for himself. He started cheating on Rose and made the girl pregnant. He felt more of a man when he was cheating on his actual wife. Towards the end of the play Troy accepted his faith and Uncle Gabe opened the Gates of Heaven.

One character trait for Troy Maxson is anger. It states on page 72, "Alright. That's strike two. You stay away from around me, boy. Don't you strike out. You living with a full count. Don't you strike out." He is angry at Cory at the moment because Cory was protecting his mother from Troy. Cory pulled Troy off of his mother and knocked him down.

Troy's second character trait is that he is athletic. Bono says on page 9, "Ain't but two men ever played baseball as good as you. That's Babe Ruth and Josh Gibson. Them's the only two men ever hit more home runs than you." Bono is telling Troy that he was a very athletic young man.

Sympathy for Troy?

I do sympathize with Troy, but I also don't. I do because he was an amazing baseball player, but he didn't make it into the big leagues because of racism. Also, he was just trying to find some cash when he was younger, but he ended up robbing stores and becoming a criminal. What I don't sympathize with Troy for is that he stole Uncle Gabe's medical bill. He then cheated on his wife with another girl who had a baby girl. The last reason will be that he hits or holds aggressively on Cory.

I chose this art work because Troy was a phenomenal baseball player back in his day. The only reason Troy is concerned about sports with Cory is because he thinks racism is going to stop Cory just like it did with Troy. Troy's life would have been so much different if racism didn't screw up his career. His family wouldn't have to worry about paying bills as much and not having food on the table for a night.

Troy's dream deferred was when he wasn't allowed to play in the big leagues for baseball. With all of his anger it became a "heavy load" for him. He would explode piece by piece because of his anger by beating Cory and Rose up, and also cheating on his wife.

Troy was a very proud black man. Since he was black even though he wasn't able to do much back then, he still tried doing everything he can for himself and his family. Racism didn't stop his life from continuing. He was mad about it for a long time, but he never truly gave up. There was always something for him to do in his life. He never sat around being depressed he just had to move on from it. I could almost picture him saying to Rose, "I'm black and I'm proud."

One of the themes in A Raisin in the Sun is people should be proud of their families. Walter says on page 148, "Well-what I mean is that we come from people who had a lot of pride. I mean-we are very proud people. And that's my sister over there and she's going to be a doctor-and we are very proud." Even though right before this quote Walter was going off on the family he knows deep down how much this family means to everyone. Walter wanted to make his father proud by deciding to move into the house and not accept Lindner's offer.

One of the themes in Fences is how racism can prevent people from achieving there dreams. Troy was an outstanding baseball player, but was never able to play because of his skin color and when he decided to play. If he wanted to start playing when Jackie Robinson started to play, he would've been in the big leagues. He was considered too early because racism was a big thing then still.

Fences and Raisin in the Sun have several similarities. One similarity these two plays both had was black families in a struggle. The main characters were the fathers/husbands. Walter and Troy both wanted success to happen in their lives, but it was crushed because of racism and anger. Racism with Walter because Mr. Lindner wanted to give money back to his family to keep the white neighborhood with all white people living in it. Anger comes into play because Troy was not accepted into the big leagues because of racism and Walter gave money to Willy Harris, but he ran off with it, so Walter lost 3 grand because he wanted his dream to come true.

There are also several differences in both plays. Walter had a good relationship with his son Travis, but Troy had a combative relationship with Cory. Troy and Rose break up at the end of the play while Walter and Ruth are still together. Walter wants everyone in his family to be happy. Troy, on the other hand, is self centered about everything. Finally, A Raisin in the Sun is more optimistic than Fences.
