Edgar Allan Poe, born in 1809, was an American writer, poet, and literary critic, best known for his macabre and gothic tales. His life was marked by tragedy, as he lost both of his parents at a young age and was raised by foster parents with whom he had a strained relationship. Poe’s life was turbulent, marred by poverty, struggles with alcoholism, and the early death of his wife, Virginia. These personal hardships deeply influenced the dark and melancholic themes found in much of his work.

Despite his difficult life, Poe is regarded as a major figure in American literature. He is credited with pioneering the detective story and psychological horror, and his literary criticism influenced future writers. His focus on the darker aspects of the human psyche set him apart from his contemporaries, leaving a lasting legacy in horror and gothic fiction.
