http://americanmafiahistory.com/
ROAST
This website, although particularly interesting in its organization, was not the most helpful website I have ever found. It provides a brief (however, enlightening) description of the mafia's origin and rise to power, along with descriptions and examples of past mafia families but most of the examples provided did not help me gain the perspective they doubtfully intended for me to receive. Because of this, I give the website a 3 out of 5. Most of the information given I already knew and it didn't go into the amount of detail I wished to receive. In the end, it was decently helpful but didn't contribute to my overall knowledge on the subject.

Technology, connections, and the public's misconception of mafias being extinct is all extorted to keep their transactions secret. The police have found many instances that imply mafia involvement, and it's been happening more often than the public would like to believe in this day and age. This article relates globally because it shows that the mafia is still running mostly undetected by authorities and they are finding ways to run without making headlines- similar to how things were conducted in the 1920s.

The author addresses the origins of the mafia, along with a brief history lesson as to why so many Italians came to America in the first place. They provide many examples of business transactions and underground crime hotspots as well as city names and typical dealings. The mafia's hand in prohibition is explained and dealt with along with their influence on pop culture. Overall, this website was very helpful and through and so I give it a 5 out of 5.

Al Capone, a ruthless and cunning mob boss, is seen in the front headlines after his recent capture and confession. He has been described as enemy number one many times in the 19th century and his confession to his most recent massacre was a big deal. Al Capone had evaded authorities for years and now he is being considered by legislative for the death penalty by electric chair. The fact that he was such a large figurehead in mafia society, it was a big deal that the police force caught him. I thought this newspaper was a very good source of information and a glimpse into the eye of the public. Without the technology we have today, information was passed differently and they only had the papers and statements from political figures to go off of.

After the Saint Valentines massacre on February 14, 1929, which was on of the bloodiest days on mob history. The Saint Valentines massacre was blamed on Al Capone; even though they had no evidence. President Herbert Hoover demanded that the Government stop Al Capone in his tracks. The Government ruled in 1927 that money gained on illegal activities was taxable. The Government decided to rule Al Capone on tax evasion. I think this is a very important photograph, because they finally captured Al Capone. This photograph symbolizes a very important day in history.

The Italian-American Mafia started around late 19th century. The first trace of Mobsters was around 1896.The New Orleans reported that Sicilian Mafia had taken over a small part of the town. The Italian- American mafia emerged from places like Italian immigrant neighborhoods, New York, Brooklyn, and on the East Coast on the United States. Mafia groups were very prominent in New York. The Prohibition era was a key factor in the build up of the Mafia. The Prohibition Era banned the sale, transport, and manufacture of alcohol; even though these bans were in place there was a high demand for Alcohol. The Mafia took advantage of this ban and provided alcohol to the general public. The Mafia made an enormous profit off of selling alcohol to the general public. Another reason why the Mafia emerged from the 1920s was because Benito Mussolini. Benito Mussolini was the Prime Minister of Italy from 1922 to 1943. While ruling Italy Benito cracked down on Sicilian Mafias. Many Italians escaped Italy, and fled to the United states where they joined the American Mafia.

The Italian-American mafia had an enormous effect on America in the 1900s- primarily on the culture. The mafia was something that stuck fear in the public, something that couldn't be helped when headlines of shootings, stabbings, and massacres relating to mafia business hit the news headlines more often than not. This fear had a large impact on the expectations for the police force, as well as pressure on politicians to bring this figures to justice. This settled around the 1920s, when the prohibition act came into effect, which angered the American public. Mafia involvement rapidly increased because of the new demand of illegal spirits and they made lots of money buying and selling illegal alcohol. Speakeasy's and hidden restaurants fronts were the main instigators of these transactions in order to keep up with the demand of alcohol for their secret costumers. The American public resented the prohibition act and therefore did not care where the alcohol came from, so long as it was provided. The mafia was such a well-known underground establishment that they were portrayed many times in movies and radio broadcasts. Traces of their role in pop cultures from the 1920's linger, and mafia stereotypes can still be seen in movies today. Descriptions of mob wars in the city and drive-by shootings inspired many action movies once the fear eventually died down. While the mob is still integrated in pop culture, they are still operating today. The fact that their interactions don't make headlines anymore, however, keep them in movies and t.v. shows still.
