Strength training for women has become far more prevalent in recent years. Weight training used to be targeted more toward males, and was focused around competitions involving bodybuilding, powerlifting and other sports. It is refreshing and empowering to see more strong, physically-fit women in the media as well as in our daily lives. Training should incorporate a combination of cardiovascular exercise and weight training to keep women strong they age, while also making sure they reach the toned physique most women are tirelessly working toward! Exercise should be enjoyable and sustainable forever, and most women MJ has worked with has found immense pleasure and success in incorporating resistance training into their workout routine. Working out should never feel like torture and should always leave you feeling refreshed and energized once the job is finished! If weight-loss is the goal, perform a combination of cardiovascular exercise and strength training while maintaining a diet with a caloric deficit of 500-1,000 calories a day. A 500 calorie deficit per day from your total daily expenditure will equate to 1 pound of weight lost each week, and a 1,000 calorie deficit will equal 2 pounds of weight lost each week.

There are many fitness myths and many misconceptions revolve around women participating in strength training. If a woman wants to feel strong and confident in her own skin, resistance training will certainly propel her toward these goals. Weight training increases lean muscle mass, which means she will achieve a more toned physique, heightened metabolism, increased energy, improved sleep patterns, and lower body fat, to name a few benefits. Weight training damages the muscles in a beneficial way. It causes micro-tears to the muscle tissue and the body has to exert extra energy (calories) to repair and rebuild these muscles, which is what leads to hypertrophy (the muscles growing and becoming more defined.) After a bout of heavy strength training, your body is recovering and rebuilding for roughly two days, and during this time, you will experience a heightened metabolism and some (hopefully not too extreme) soreness.

Women's Strength Training Denver is MJ’s specialty, and she loves all the incredible women she gets to see on a regular basis. According to MJ, the most common misconception her clients have is about getting “too big” by lifting heavy weights. MJ has the advantage of being a competitive powerlifter herself, and weighing in at a whopping 123 pounds and 16% body fat, she can combat those thoughts with physical proof that a woman’s body will not “bulk up” when beginning to lift heavy weights. As a woman, our bodies are created to produce babies, and because of this, our bodies try to hold onto fat and do not prioritize building muscle. Men have far more testosterone and less estrogen than women do and this makes it easier for them to make slight changes in diet and lifestyle and see significant results. Resistance training will help women develop endurance, strength, power and overall toning.

Addressing Safety Issues

Lifting and carrying weights should be safe as long as you have the proper guidance and instruction. Personal trainers are paramount when beginning to weight train for the first time, or when beginning a routine or type of exercise that is new and unfamiliar. It takes years of training and a lot of research to become an “expert” in the field, and the risk for injury while learning how to navigate this new lifestyle is very high. To Find a Personal Trainer in Denver would make for a really great investment, and MJ is confident in her abilities. She loves a challenge and has a variety of experience in working with extreme weight loss clients, athletes, pregnant women, children with learning disabilities, bikini bodybuilding competitors and several other populations.
